Unhappy Cherry Eye

My 3 month old puppy just developed cherry eye in her left eye. Has anyone else's Havanese develop cherry eye? Her vet put her on steroid drops for 10 days, but I'm just a concerned mother. If your Havanese has had Cherry eye, please share with me your experience. I'd really like to know more about it and what can be done, or should be done. Thanks!

Smile Can Be Fixed

Hi Cindy,

I know you're worried as we were, but trust me that this can be fixed fairly easily and, of course, should be. If the drops don't work, and they didn't for Keeper, the surgeon (our regular vet who is great) executes a procedure where the gland is 'secured' as it would be if cherry eye was not present. This
involves only one stitch as I understand it.

I would ask if your veteranarian does this procedure or what he or she would recommend. Our vet cautioned that it could look bad right after surgery but by the second day you really couldn't tell anything had been done and the eye was clear. We were grateful for his skill. The dreaded cone needed to be worn for about 5 days as I remember.

AKC rules do allow for showing the dog if you are interested in that after the
procedure.

Good luck and I know all will be well--we just worry don't we?

Cindy, sorry about your baby's eye. There is at least one thread if not more devoted to this subject so if you do a search you should be able to find lots of info about this condition.

Welcome to the forum! We need pictures!

My Cassie came to me as a foster through havanese rescue. She was 2 1/2 years old and had a cherry eye that had not been repaired. My vet repaired it surgically by tacking the glad with 2 stitches. If you do need to have surgery, they say to be careful and make sure the vet tacks the glad and does not cut it off. That can lead to dry eye in the future. Cassie had to wear a cone (I got a soft one which we liked much better) for a week or two and has been perfect ever since.

I don't know too much about cherry eye, hopefully your vet has some answers as to the severity of it, I know if caught early, it is really quite treatable.

There used to be a member here who was a breeder that had a dog wtih cherry eye, but i can't recall many threads lately, you can try the search function up top and see what turns up.

Although, the fact that your pup is being treated with drops and not surgical removal is certainly a positive sign it was caught early

Scudder had a cherry eye. The vet wanted me to wait until it was always visible. His cherry eye would pop in and out. Eventually, it stayed out. My vet told me there were many ways to correct cherry eye. He would decide on which way, when he was doing the surgery. He said it depended on the eye shape. Sometimes if they just tack it down, it can pop back out. I had seen some dogs get surgery and you couldn't even tell afterwards. Scudder was a different story. You could tell he had surgery for sure! When I picked him up from the vet, I gasped! They shave his entire eye area and his eye was bulging out! It was so swollen. I had trouble even looking at him The vet told me he had to shave the area. He ended up carving a pocket and then stitching the cherry eye. This is what caused all the swelling. Poor little Scuds. He had to wear the cone for about 10 days. It was a pain for him to go through the dog door. He kept getting stuck. He had surgery years ago. He is now 4 years old and no cherry eye. I don't have any post op pictures, as he was hard to look at Here is a picture of him now, all fixed up.

My Lhasa has Cherry eye his still is soft and can be poped back in place. Boo Boo has had it for about the last 5 yrs, if I could have it fixed I would, it is a easy surgery and most do well. Boo Boo has PRA , dry eye, and has been blind for about 10yrs and we have to have his preassure checked often. The eye doctors all say no surgery for him. He is fine, I wish they could, I wish they could do lots of things for him. The drops some times work. Best of luck. Pictures, Pictures we need pictures...we love pictures.

Robbie, Boo Boo, Yogi, and Misty's human.
Poohkey miss you, monkey.
