What We've Been Up To

It seems like I've fallen into a pattern of disappearing then returning to give a lengthy update on the endeavors of my two younger boys.

Nino is nearing his 3rd birthday, and after about 5 months off, he is also nearing his excellent agility title, needing only one Q for each jumpers and standard. He has already amassed 3 standard legs, but all were on the same weekend under the same judge. Because of this, we need a 4th under a different judge. I don't have any plans to do any trials before 2019, so we are on a bit of a pause With that 3rd run under the judge that was a bit of a throwaway, we had the 5th fastest time across all heights, 3rd fastest only counting dogs that also Qd. Lots of fun! He also picked up an 8 point T2B Q that weekend (despite me not walking the course), putting him 1/5 of the way toward that title in both Qs and points.

Brisket has been shown 3 days in total and amassed some points to his championship. His first show was about 3 weeks ago where he was the only dog entry, so no points. We could have gotten a crossover point, but Winners Bitch went Best Of Breed over a special, so I wouldn't expect the judge to give us anything (BOB/WB was also his "littermate"...half sister born 2 days earlier and raised with him). He did get Best Of Breed Puppy and ended up taking 1st place in the Puppy Toy Group.

He showed again a week ago, both days that weekend. Day 1 he went and got himself a 3 point major, which absolutely shocked me given the quality of competition at the show. Multiple adult dogs in full coat...watch the winners video...baby dog sticks out like a sore thumb, but his structure and movement put him on top that day. The next day we got dumped. Not even a reserve. Judge liked poofy coat. What can ya do?

Brisket has also started his sport foundations class and LOVES it. I'm a bit behind in training actual behaviors as I focused majorly on having a puppy I enjoyed living with, but we will get there!

Friday Standard Q -
T2B Q -
Saturday Standard Q -
Sunday Standard Q (the fast one) -

I love to watch you and Nino work together, both on the same page. What a performer! I can tell a lot of diligent work by both of you, to achieve these accomplishments. Felicidades!

You crack me up KarMar, one day running around the agility ring at a frenetic, break neck pace (and bringing home the gold) and the next day, cool calm and collected in the conformation ring (and bringing home the gold). Oh, to be young again!

I will admit, after a 5 year month hiatus (barring the national specialty), three weekends in a row has taken it out of me. I'm thankful to wake up at normal hours and to not be gone 14 hours at a time this weekend

I loved the videos and photos! Your boys are absolutely gorgeous. Congratulations to both of them, and to you!! Great work!

I have to ask - I noticed Briskets hair above his eyes is long and combed back, and it stays there!!! I expected to see it was in some kind of top knot. How do you get it to do that?

Ha! Some spit and a prayer for a trip around the show ring. It doesn't stay in real life!

Trust me, I'm very happy with where it is. In fact, the other day I found YouTube videos of dad Slider at Brisket's age...same amount of coat then...and I'll be happy if B grows up to have half the coat quality his papa did. However, when he is in the ring with all adult dogs like I was...poor guy looks absolutely naked. Glad the judge didn't let that throw her eye off him.

Bit of hairspray on a slicker brush, then that brushed through the top knot Havanese can be shown with the topknot hair in one of three ways: falling forward, back and to the sides, or in two braids. Brisket's hair is too short for braids (and I find I only like them on a few dogs), and I prefer hair be kept back so the judge can see the quintessential Havanese expression and so my dogs don't have to deal with any vision impediment in the ring, so back and to the sides it is. I do also keep his hair in pigtails leading up to a show, as it trains the hair back better than one topknot in the middle does. The amount of product I use is minimal, especially compared to the bouffant some of our competitors sport. So much for natural presentation, eh?
