Harness Question

Can anyone recommend a harness that doesnít go over the dogs head? Bodie always squeezes his eyes shut when I put his harness on and heís very skittish if anyone else outside of my husband and I try to put the harness on him. We were gone for a few days and he wouldnít let the dog sitter get near him with the harness. 😕. I need to work with him to get over his fear so Iím looking into behavior classes near me.

I got this one for my puppy. It buckles at the back of the neck and velcros around the body. You don't have to pull it over the head

Thank you so much! I havenít tried that kind. Do you have to put their front legs through the holes?

Yes, the front legs have to go through the leg holes.

I bought one at Target a few months ago(in store). Boots & Barkley. He steps into it and the buckle snaps shut. It is not fabric like the one above but more like a leash/collar material.
I bought 2 sizes on impulse and he needed the bigger one. I was surprised.

Willow has a Curli brand harness. She steps into it and then there is velcro across the back plus a clip. She has never been able to pull out of it. I like it. I also got a larger size for when she has a sweater or coat on that would be big enough to go over the clothing.

I recommend the Gooby escape free harness. It is neoprene so it reduces tangles and it is easier to get a dog to step into because it holds its shape. It has a clips on the back that you secure the leash to that loosen when the dog isnít pulling but tightens when pressure is exerted.

I donít know how to link the site properly but it is www.goobypet.com. They have different ones but here is their basic one I have seen. The size for a Havanese should be pretty true since they donít have deep chests. I am also attaching a screenshot of the harness.

Just realized I should probably buy one for Kati.

We have the over the head puppia but it's getting a little small for Perry's head (still the same one from when he was 8 months old), so we generally use this one
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The straps are really thin so it's not very heavy on him so not too hot or confining when he wears it all day (usually when we're traveling or when we're at my Mom's). It clips on the back and has the double rings to hook the leash to, so I don't worry in case the clip might break.

I also have this one

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The rolled leather harness that I can slip him in/ out of when I don't want to keep a harness on him. I added a clip to the top to avoid it from sliding and becoming escapable .

His winter fleece vest has a leash hook at the top - not 100% happy with that because I'd prefer to hook the leash to the harness, but haven't found a vest where you can hook the harness through it (thinking about putting a slit in the vest so I can hook the leash through it instead of to it.

If/ when we move somewhere where he's out walking in the harness a lot more I'll probably need to find one that's not as high in the front because I do think the one has has is a little too high on his chest.

I love how easy that looks to put on. I bought Zumba The Puppia Right-Fit Harness with adjustable straps but here lately its been causing matts and I have three clips to snap on and off. I do have the Pet Safe 3 in 1 harness (recommended in this forum) for when she reaches 10 lbs (their Small size is not very small), so this one looks good for the interim.

Questions; Do you think the fleece would be uncomfortable in Florida summers? The New Pioneer harness also looks like it has possibilities, but it looks like it has four clips! The Easy Fit Escape free harness has compressed foam. Would that contribute to matting? I liked the Memory Foam option but that looks even heavier (and thus hotter?) than the other two. Has anyone used these? Thoughts?
