Walkies and paw balm

Oliver went on his very first walk today and he loved it! We bought him some socks and he was not about to wear them, so we took him out "barefoot" and then gave him a bath when we got home. Is paw balm the way to go? Recommendations on brands? We live in an urban area and there is a lot of salt on the sidewalks.

Be very careful "walking" young puppies. No more than a very few minutes. Even if they seem to be enjoying themselves, long walks, particularly on pavement can be very bad for developing joints.

If you have salt on your sidewalks, I'd be even more cautious. I tend to keep even my adult dogs off salted pavement. If they have to walk on salt, I thoroughly wash their feet and bellies when we get home, so they don't lick it and make themselves sick.

A dog stroller can be great for the first 6-9 months with a small breed puppy. You can let them down to walk occasionally where it's safe, but have them ride most of the way so they don't over-do it. Here is Panda when she was a "wee one"... We let her explore a bit in our yard, where we do not use road salt, just sand. Then she went in the stroller for the "main" walk, which is on our rail trail. (no salt) Pixel was in the stroller for the photo, but she really walked otherwise! But she was almost a year by then Then when we got to a safe grassy area Panda got to come out and play again.

krandall, yes, we only took him out for five minutes, then gave him a bath when we got home to get the salt off. We live in a high rise condo so it was really first time being on the ground outside. I was worried that he'd be afraid, but he loved it!
