First day home questions

Hey all,

We are going to get our puppy this sunday. We were expecting to get the puppy in 3 weeks, but we got lucky, and the breeder had one, from his earlier litter.

Since it was so quick, we are just getting ready, and buying everything.

I have been reading and reading this forum.. So much of information..

So far, I have narrowed down on these:

1. Ex-Pen: (After reading multiple threads)

https://smile.amazon.com/BestPet-Hea...YC1TFQS7H2J2ZG

2. Crate :
I read several threads on plastic vs metal crates. I was thinking of going with metal, as the puppy is right now in a metal crate.

Are there any good crate suggestions? I was thinking 2 crates, one in the Ex-Pen and the other for night. Should the night one, be a little more smaller - for helping with potty training?

3. When you bring the puppy home, do you leave the puppy in the ex-pen all the time and just play with it, in the ex-pen? Or is it like you take the puppy out and play with it, but take it to the ex-pen (for potty etc), every hour?

Sorry for so many questions..

You don’t NEED two, but I ended up with two and I made use of them. I used the smaller one in my bedroom and a slightly bigger one with a divider in his expen. Both of mine were pretty inexpensive, though, I think from Amazon, Midwest brand maybe. The smaller one I took with us to my parents’ house a few times because it folds flat.

Both. The idea is containment, for the purposes of potty training and safety. If you aren’t watching him completely, he’s contained. You’re defining his “house,” and it will gradually get bigger.
At first you’ll probably set it up small, (for the same reason you’re considering a smaller crate) and there might not be a lot of room to play with him in it. But you can start slowly expanding as long as he’s reliable. Eventually our ex pen just blocked off access to the adjoining rooms. You might ask the breeder what introduction to potty training they’ve already started. Also the size of the crate he’s in now since you said he sleeps in a wire crate.

You’ll do great, you’re not asking too many questions, you’re asking the right questions! I was confused by the expen because we were planning to crate train and I wasn’t clear on how they worked together.

What an exciting week!

I have two wire crates. They are both covered with either a blanket or crate cover to make them more “den” like. I would get the size crate that will hold your puppy as an adult and use a divider at first. I also used an expen. For me it was a place I could put the puppy when I wanted her to have more room than the crate, but couldn’t keep eyes on her every second. I used crate training to potty train so I did not have a potty area in there. When she did have a potty accident as a puppy it was always in the pen, not the crate. Good luck with your new puppy. Such an exciting time!
