Tear Staining

Hi my name is Toni and I have an amazing little 10 month old Havanese that I am absolutely in Love with! I think he is perfect just the way he is but he has tear staining and a lot of people bring this to my attention. I would Love for people to just see my little Charlie when they meet him instead of the tear staining. I have read all about it and I have tryed Angel Eyes which did not work at all for him.

Does anyone know of anything that can help?? Thanks.

There are several things that can come into play to cause tearstains. Read here:
http://www.bhejei.com/tearsta.htm

What helps:
Grain free food
distilled water
Keeping the face clean and dry
1/4 -1/2 powdered buttermilk (I can't attest to how well it works as I've only been supplementing it for 2 days now but its a lot cheaper and healthier for them as it doesn't have antibiotics in it)

Powdered buttermilk:

Hi and to the forum

We have another thread on this and there are also some ideas on there, I know I posted what I do to keep her eyes dry.

http://www.havaneseforum.com/showthread.php?t=13326

Its basically just keeping the eye fur dry, the constant wetness is what makes the red yeast grow and then discolor.

Thanks Kara, I was going to "page" you and ask about this because Gucci looks so nice and white in her pictures. Right now Lizzie looks awful and won't eat her food when I put the Angel's Eye's in it. Will try the tips on the link you gave.

I did use a whitening powder with cream once, I think it was like a bleaching tip from one of those pages but I had purchased it at a show-dog store online, it worked great, but I cant find it (the store and link).. If I do,I'll post it.

What kind of dog food are you feeding?

Clover spent most of his life with really terrible red tear stains all over his face. When he was 8, I switched him to a better dog food, and they disappeared completely. Live and learn.

People in the dog show world know me as Karen, but the rest of the world knows me & I will introduce myself as Kat... I've been showing dogs longer than I've had the nickname, and the nickname is not new!

Hi Kat, not sure if you are asking me, but Lizzie eats Nature's Variety Instinct kibble in rabbit and I mix canned with it. That could be Instinct rabbit, lamb, chicken, Wellness Core Turkey and Wellness Turkey. We don't drink our well water and neither do the pets. They drink bottled. It is just really frustrating. What food did you switch to?

Has anyone used Drs Foster & Smith Show Eye solution or pads?

This product appears pretty inexpensive and seems to work immediately. It might address the cosmetic issues associated with tear stains. Longer term solutions seem to be food and water based. I did read reviews for Angel Eyes and the product seems safe. It's made of 100% beef liver but, honestly, I'm not sure how that works. I give Eli dehydrated beef liver cubes and I don't think they have any affect on tear stains. One would think that beef liver is beef liver is beef liver whether the dog gets it in powder form or dehydrated cubes. Huh.

I found the link I was looking for earlier on whitening the existing stains, this stuff works great but you have to be careful using it, it is 20 volume peroxide and it can't touch the skin and eye of course:

http://www.showoffproducts.com/index...ening-kit.html

It took off some foot/paw stains she had, too..something red-dish she got into, I used it a few years ago, now I just more or less go for the preventive treatments, plus..I think my kit got thrown away..
