HOME MADE FOOD & TREATS

Patti, 13 months, has decided to stop eating or reluctantly eats. Like all Havanese she has been picky and thought I'd finally found a solution. Instinct Kibble mixed with Small Breed Merrick chicken or beef stew. She loves fresh chicken I've boiled. Does anyone cook for their dogs? I've read you need to add special supplements to the food. I'm not very interested in cooking dog food, but might give it a try if I had a good recipe. Thanks!

if you cook a ggood portion of her diet you should consult with a nutritionist.

I feed homemade but before that fed Natures Variety Raw food. My dogs both loved it.

I don't believe all (or even most) Havanese are picky eaters. I believe they are smart dogs who are VERY good at tricking their owners into feeding them what they want.
Melissa Brill, Mikki and NewWings like this.

I'm totally with Karen on this one (with a few caveats) - unless there's a medical problem they're not going to starve themselves.

My caveats are:
- If they're not crazy about their kibble moisten it
- the 10 minute rule - put it down, if they don't eat in 10 minutes, pick it up, don't treat til the next meal, give it to them then. The caveat - IF I put Perry's food down while it's too wet (not yet soaked in) he won't eat it for a while, so I have to factor that into the 10 minute rule (either don't set it down til it's totally soaked in OR put it down but give him time to wait for it to be "right")

He's so funny because as soon as I make his food he gets so excited you would think he's starving to death... but if I put it down too early he just looks at me like 'what in the world is THAT?' and will wait for a while til it's all soaked in OR he decides it's the right consistency.

ALL,
Good advice. Patti didn't eat for a day and half. Then started skipping dinner. I feed her twice a day. I stopped feeding her in the evenings for a while. She went back wanting to eat at night. Since, she gained a pound I've cut back on how much I was feeding her.

I feed her Small Breed Merrick Stew 3.5oz @ 90 calories with 1/4 cup of Instinct Raw Boost Kibble @ 125 calories in the morning. Evening 3.5oz Merrick Stew only. Patti, also, gets a few treats during the day.
