A new dog in our life.

For those of you who don't know, our daughter lost her dog to cancer on March 4th. It was sudden--five days from diagnosis to euthanasia--and, at nine, Daffney was much too young to go. I got some good advice here on how to help our Havanese mix (Smokey) handle losing the doggy he'd lived with since we adopted him.

My daughter and her husband opened their lives and hearts to a Lab mix earlier this month. Marley (named after the first movie Daffney and our daughter watched together) and Smokey have started playing together--they're mismatched in size but have a good time. Marley is about a year-and-a-half old and has no patience for photographs, but here are a few we managed to get. I especially like the one of Marley and Smokey looking like a couple of vicious pups. It took about 20 pictures to get one of them playing that wasn't a blur. They were having so much fun!

I was just thinking about you last night and wondering how you all were doing. I am so happy for you and glad you found Marley. By the looks of things Smokey is too. Congrats on your new cutie pie.

Thank you. We think that Daffney picked Marley out and she made a good choice: Marly is mature enough to have some basics down, young enough that she can adapt to a new environment, energetic enough that her parents have to spend time wearing her out. All good things, especially when you're getting your feet back under you. And she's really good with Smokey. The rescue said she had a litter of pups, and probably just finished weaning them, before she was dumped (how could someone do that?!), so that might be one reason she will play gently with him: He is almost puppy-sized!
