Perry has screwworms :(

So, earlier in the week I noticed that Perry had these bumps on his leg and back end. One bump I usually don't worry about but there were 4-5 of them, so, suspecting screwworms, I called the vet and she came over on Tuesday and yep, that's what they are. The vet doesn't like to give the meds for screwworms to small dogs (ivermectin) so decided that he didn't need them at the moment and the best thing to do was to give him a really short puppy cut (so the bumps were easier to find and examine) and for me to keep an eye on them and (yuck) pull out the worms if/when I find any new ones (she dealt with the existing ones though most of them had already vacated the premise so to speak).

So, here is Perry's new, very short (I used the very smallest guide on the clippers) puppy cut. Other than it being shorter than usual (I usually use the next biggest guide), it doesn't look too bad I don't think. I did keep his ears and face (and tail) longer, but tried to trim the face/ ears down so they didn't look too ridiculous against the really short body.

Since we're traveling in a month, if they're not gone in 2 weeks he will need to go on the meds (the US travel health certificate has to certify that he's either clear or been treated for screw worms), so here's hoping that they are done by then.

You did a fantastic job on his trim! He looks great, I think his face and ears are a great length. When ours was cut short and we wanted to keep his head a little longer he looked like a Q tip! If we ever need an emergency short cut again Iím taking these pictures as reference

Hope it clears up soon!

I've never heard of screw worms before and goggled. Not that much info on them. How do you think he got them? Is this common where you live?
But he looks cute with the short do. I'm sorry for both of you.

We live in Kampala Uganda and they're very common here. This is Perry's third rainy season and the vet seemed to think we were lucky that this is the first time he got them. The flies apparently lay eggs on the grass and when they (the dog) squats the eggs/ larvae get on the dog and burrow (ick!). I'm definitely going to have to make sure that the gardener keeps the grass shorter from now on!

Uganda is one of the countries where we have to get a specific screw worm certificate as part of his health certificate when we travel to the US (certifying that he's clear of them or has been treated for them).

Thanks for explaining. It appears that there have been cases here in Florida. I will be watching out for this with our rainy season approaching.

Sending good vibes that the screwworms are out of the way prior to your travel plans. Perry looks sooooo cute!

Does Perry seem to be bothered by the SW? I hope they're all gone soon! He looks great in his new 'do!

I want to learn to cut Patti. I'm afraid! How did you figure out how to do it?
