Traveling - What do you do with your Havie?

We are planning a trip to Disney and Dom. Republic this summer. Usually, when we travel, we leave Bumi with my sister (who also has a Hav), but she is going with us and my Mom is going away as well. I have no other family around other that my SIL who has a Pitbull that eats little doggies for lunch!

I know I can count 100% on his breeder (Arlene) to watch Bumi, but that would mean that I have to go to MN (from CT) and then back and down to FL. I would hate to leave him at a Pet Hotel, I have never heard good things about it and I am terrified that Bumi won't be taken care of properly.

What do you gals do when you travel? (taking him is not an option).

Help!

Gracias!

Zury

Zury, I am not sure if it would be worth the trip to you, but we do watch small dogs (mostly havs) in our home. We are in the Philly suburbs, so depending on what part of CT you are in, it is probably 3+ hours away. I could meet you in North Jersey if that helps. If you are driving to Florida, we are probably on the way. Send me a PM if you would like any more information.

You could also ask around at your vet, groomer, etc. I have a girl from my groomer who comes and stays at my house with my dogs when we are away. She is wonderful. A pet hotel is just not an option for my guys. I don't think they could handle it (or could I).

Also, I know around here many petsitting companies offer overnights in their homes. It does get rather expensive, but it might be worth searching the local petsitting companies and seeing if there is anyone that could stay there.

We leave Kipling with the puppy trainer we worked with who also dog sits and boards...so Kipling hangs with two German Shephards and any other dogs that happen to be staying during that time. We trust the situation even when there are big dogs because of his trainer background. He knows how to keep Kipling safe.

We also use in-home care... either with the trainer-friend who helped me pick Kodi out or with our trainer/groomer who also does in-home dog sitting. I was a little nervous the first time I left him with each of them, but when I got back, he had obviously had so much fun, and had bonded so mush with his caregiver that I had no qualms about trips after that. When he sees both of these people he practically turns himself inside out with delight, and he LOVES the opportunity to play with the other dogs.

we also have in-home pet sitter, or i prefer to call her our puppy nanny. ask friends who have dogs and cats, that's how we found her. our friend has multiple cats and we were talking about how we were looking for someone and she recommended her nanny. ask the vet, groomer, friends. just get the word out.
i also wont put Django in a "Dog spa/hotel" he wouldn't do well there and i would need major rehabilitation after we returned!

You might also try posting or talking to a minister at your church or a local church. They may know of someone who would be able to help with this....

I leave my pup at the same place he does doggie daycare once a week. He always comes home exhausted after daycare and they tell me he never stops playing with the other dogs. While I was nervous when I left him for a week overnight, he didn't want to leave when I picked him up. He actually did better there over Thanksgiving than bringing him with me for Christmas (ie didn't eat as much, had a couple of accidents - it was a new, bigger place and we didn't restrict his space as much as we should have). My dog is really social so he just loves being around other pups. If you have a doggie day care, it's worth checking out. You can try a few day leaves before deciding if it's a good overnight place.

We are fortunate enough to have our choice of two in home sitters when we go away. The price is $45.-$50 a night and that includes all four of ours. It is amazing how little it actually costs compared to boarding them which I wouldn't even consider.
