Kojo ran through Fire Ant mound

I was trying very hard to keep him away from two mounds in backyard. But when he goes outside he rans around like crazy not even stopping to sniff. It is usually too wet to let him out so probably why he goes nuts. And always requires a bath afterwards.

Yesterday he ran right through a fire ant mound. Started biting himself where the ants were biting him. I picked him up and had ants biting me on my arms. So immediately gave him a bath and found about 10 fire ants in hair on his legs. Since I didn't have time to comb out any mats, it took a while to get him all cleaned up. He was fine after that but fear he could become allergic to fire ants for future bites.

Been researching natural ways to kill fire ant mounds. Didn't want to use poison as he will walk in it and lick his paws. One promising suggestion was orange oil & molasses added to water and spray around and on mound. The orange oil breaks down fats and molasses makes it stick to ants. Will probably try this first.

I would use chemicals for fire ants and put something over the treatment to keep him out of it. Like a plastic jug with ends removed and shove it in the ground. Fire ants are not easily controlled. You don't want to get your whole yard infested. I do chemical treatments for insects and do the back yard at one time, dog goes out front for a few days, then I do one side of the front etc.

@LUVmyHava , I know it's not nice, but I have to laugh at the antics of Kojo. He would fit in well in our household. He's a spirited little guy and full of the devil. I guarantee he and Ricky would be best friends. I know they would constantly be trying to outdo each other to see who could be more outrageous!

Yes, Kojo is into everything and always trying to outsmart me.

Last evening and this AM grass was fairly dry (no rain for couple days), so took him out into backyard right after his meals. He ran around the yard so fast, rolling in grass, grabbing dandelions in his mouth and clumps of grass from mowing. I just sit and watched him go silly. After 5 minutes he stopped and did his poo. So making progress. I guess I just need to take him outside even in the rain. Still don't have harness that fits him. So for now, I just let him run and exercise will stimulate the poo. I let him run around some more as reward for doing it. When we come back inside, he crashes in his bed for long nap.

That's the right idea, let him burn off some energy and it will stimulate his bowels. So it is a win/win for both of you. And then when he comes back in, he crashes and yet another win for you to get some peace and quiet. Do this at least every two hours if you can. If you have a secure yard, no harness or restraint is necessary, just let him go nuts, and try chasing him, he will love it.

I really like Kojo, he reminds me of a little dog I know very well (who is crashed beside me right now)
