Pop Up Ads

Several forum members have shared that pop up ads are limiting their user experience on this site. I would find that frustrating too. I don't get pop up ads on this forum and this is how I do it.

First, a caveat, I use Google Chrome browser running on my HP personal computer. I don't know if my method will work with other browsers or on an Apple computer.

I use an app called Adblock Plus. I have been using it for 4 years now and I am 100% satisfied. It is configurable with filters so you can block ads on some sites and allow them on others if you wish. Another ad blocker app that comes highly recommended is uBlock Origin. I don't have any experience with this one but I believe it is equal to or better than Adblock Plus. Both of these apps are free, run in the background on your computer, and therefore are easy to use.

I realize that Havanese Forum depends on revenue from pop up ads to pay their bills for hosting this site. But pop up ads are annoying. I would prefer that HF would offer a voluntary subscription service for a fee that would eliminate all ads for that particular subscriber. I would pay that subscription fee because I find this chat forum so darn valuable to me. I don't do Facebook. I am opposed to the concept of a company (Facebook) selling my personal information to anonymous sources who will spam me with all kinds of unwanted emails, phone calls, and mailings. Nope, I'm not going to allow that. So you won't be seeing me on the Facebook Havanese forum anytime soon.

YMMV

I don’t mind ads too much, for reasons you cite re free services need revenue to exist, but this stuff where the ad is a video or a free prize that takes over your screen is driving me crazy. I mostly use an ipad and go in and delete the cookies that come with the free prize one (have ipad set to reject most cookies but this site gets them thru) and it goes away for awhile. Then the new one tells me to turn my device horizontal, I did it once and it is some kind of insurance video, I think. It is going to drive people away who are not skilled at outwitting them when they are more than an ad for dog food!

I am using Adblock Plus on an iMac with Safari browser. Adblock hasn't been updated in forever. Saw some reviews that updates ruined the app so I just keep plugging along with the old version. I have never seen a popup ad here. Agree, I would gladly pay a subscription to use this forum, even if I'm not being hounded by ads here.

I have an IPad Pro. If I click on a link in a Havanese forum email to access the forum, I almost always get pop ups. If I go to the Havanese forum directly from Safari I never get pop ups. I do not have any pop up blocking software that I know of.

What emails from Havanese Forum? I never receive any emails from HF. I always access HF directly from my computer with a bookmark I have saved. These emails sound like spam or phishing, not initiated by Havanese Forum. DON'T OPEN OR CLICK ON THOSE LINKS!

On your initial settings you have the option to “subscribe” to a thread that you have posted on...you then get an email from the forum telling you someone has added a comment to that thread. The email contains the comment itself, the name of the person and a link to the thread. It also tells you that it won’t generate an email for every post to that thread, but just a few..no idea how they choose, but click on the link (which is legitimate) takes you back to thread and you see the whole thing...not spam but a function of your settings.

Got it, you are correct, I have seen that option but I have never used it. Good catch. Maybe that's why I don't get the pop up ads.

I am going to disable that option, just in case that’s it. If it doesn’t stop it, then I’ll try the apps you recommended. Thanks, Popi, for that information.
