Unhappy Hugo's mom-Legg-Calve-Perth Disease

I wrote before to introduce myself and had questions about Hugo's digestive issues and hip problems. The vet had taken X-rays while he was under sedation at a little over 6 months and didn't find anything too remarkable except rather 'shallow' sockets. Two weeks ago, after playing hard, Hugo began to limp favoring his right hip. We thought maybe he'd pulled a muscle, but things didn't get better (although he continued to be a happy little guy!). Today we took him to the vet and new xrays revealed deterioration in his right hip ball joint. Tentative diagnosis is Legg-Calve-Perth Disease. An orthopedic surgeon is being consulted, but it looks like it's going to take surgery and about 2 months recovery for Hugo to be (hopefully) ok. I've read up on this, and apparently this condition tends to occur in small dogs between 5-8 months of age. Wondered if anyone else had had experience with this, if you had surgery, how recovery went and the overall outcome. I'm upset Hugo has to undergo the surgery and that he won't be able to socialize and play with other pups until he's better. Poor little guy, it seems like it never ends!

Thanks, Molly! I think Hugo's chances are great, just really upset this poor little guy has to go through so much! Really glad we're able to help him, though. He brings such joy to our lives!

So sorry for Hugo and you. Have you talked to his breeder about this? They may have some good advice.

So very sorry to hear about Hugo. That is a lot for all of you to go through. What a long recovery time. I hope everything goes well and Hugo is bouncing around like crazy once he heals.

Thanks, Ollie's mom! While I wish like crazy Hugo didn't have to go through this, I've heard a number of very encouraging stories about how well pups have done once recovered. But, yeah, not looking forward to my poor baby undergoing surgery then having such a lengthy recovery time. VERY glad I got pet insurance! They've been great so far!

So sorry he, and you have to go through this, but from reading about this in other threads on the forum, it sounds like he will end up just fine.

Best of luck, and thanks so much for taking care of him!
