Indoor potty training and using a pan with a grate

I do not have my puppy yet, but have been preparing. I plan to do indoor potty training so I bought a pan with the grate on top. Is that the type that is used most? It seems like it might be uncomfortable for the puppy to stand on. Can someone comment about this?? Thanks.

I worried about that, too, when I went from the Ugodog to the Blyss. It had more holes in it, and I wondered if it would hurt Zumba’s paws. No, she had no problem with the grate at all. More with its size, since it was smaller than the Ugodog, but now she uses them interchangeably. It’s whichever one is closer. And, yes, she’s used it as a bed, too, though these days it’s the toy box that she’s more inclined to run away to, to sleep, or to chew on her favorite treat or toy.

If the dogs' poop is normal, it just sits on top, and you can pick it up with a kleenex and put it in the toilet with no mess left behind. If someone has loose stools, which rarely happens in our house, but of course it can, you do need to spray the grate down. In decent weather, I take it outside and use the garden hose. In the winter, I use a shower that we really don't use, then rinse the shower stall with some diluted bleach. But this is MAYBE a 2-3 time a year thing, It is NOT a common occurrence.

I've used artificial grass and grates. Patti had no problem switching from the stinky artificial grass to trays with grates. She uses a number of different potty trays and easily transitions from one to the other.

You want poop soft but firm. :) That's the goal. If the poop is firm it's easy to pick up with a tissue. If very soft you'll need to wipe it off the grate and when changing the pad or pellets you can rinse it off. No Big Deal!

My 5 month old has no problem standing on the grate, which isn't sharp or rough. The poop dumps easily into the toilet, or most does. I just wash the grate in the laundry sink if there is residue. I use cheap pads I buy on Amazon and change the pads as needed. I love not having to take Sancho outside at night or in bad weather. He will pee outside sometimes when we walk, but usually prefers to poop inside.
