Introduction

I looked but couldn't find an introduction thread. If I'm out of line making my first post here, please redirect me.

My wife and I have always had large dogs, but when we lost Heidi, our German Shepherd Dog in October, we decided that we wanted a smaller, non-shedding dog. After researching several terriers we heard about the Havanese and fell in love without ever even seeing one!

We are going to visit our little guy on February 2nd and will pick him up on February 19th!

We're hoping to get involved in agility or obedience or both. Most of all though, we are looking forward to spending time with an intelligent, energetic friend. We hope to learn more about the breed here.

Welcome to the group. This is the ongoing thread for introductions. http://www.havaneseforum.com/showthr...oduce+yourself

You're about to be delighted with your choice of breed. They are adorable, lovable, smart and utter charmers. Stick around and you'll learn a lot here and you'll spend time with some of the nicest people around.

Welcome!!! I do both agility and obedience with my guy, and he's great at both. You'll have a blast with your new pup. They are so sweet and loving, and at the same time, smart as whips! Kodi knew "sit" and "down" within a week of joining our family at 11 weeks. He came to us pretty well potty trained... we just had to keep up with the breeder's program.

Oh... and Kodi's BFF is a German Shepherd named Buddy!

Welcome to the forum.
When you go pick up your puppy learn a bit what to look for a lot of folks have the pup soaped down to see if his or her legs are strait . You also want to be sure the the pups parents were registered with the orthopedic foundation www.offa.org The breeder should supply you with the paper work.
I learned the hard way I payed about $600.00 less than most of the Havanese owned on this forum. So far we have spend well over the additional $600.00 in added vet bills.
I hope your new pup is a happy healthy little guy.

Maddie at 5mo old

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! I've had dogs all my life. The almost 4 months since Heidi died seems an eternity! I can't wait to meet my next canine buddy!

Welcome!

You've had dogs your entire life...but you've never had a Havanese! ;-)

I had large dogs my entire life, as well. I had a GSD who was the most amazing girl... At different points I've also had border collies (who actually worked, I grew up on a farm/ranch), a blue heeler, pit bulls, and an akita. They were all amazing and wonderful in their own way.

But I have to be honest - I was completely unprepared for a small/companion dog! Their personalities are SOO different from any large breed. It took some adjusting, but we have a good routine now. They trained me properly! ;-)

You'll do fine! Just don't be surprised if you have to re-learn many things you previously knew. At least, that was my experience. Thanks for stopping in, and we definitely want pictures once your newest family member joins you!
