Advice in Apartment building settings

Hi Everyone,
I will be bring my puppy home on Saturday. The breeder just reached out with info relative to Sierra's first vet visit and vaccinations. She mentioned being very cautious around other animals and in park settings until she is fully vaccinated. My question is how in the world do I safely train her to go outside while living in an apartment building with communal grounds for pets to go the bathroom? Am I correct to assume it's ok to train to go outside as long as we are careful and make sure she isn't near things left unpicked up? You can really drive yourself crazy with all the info on little ones.

Yes I think you are in a little tighter situation because you don’t have a private yard, but you just do the best you can. The same question comes up with socialization, but it’s so important, just do your best to interact with healthy dogs and try not to drive yourself too crazy

If you are in an apartment, though, I really strongly suggest looking through the threads on indoor potty training. It will save your sanity the first few weeks so you don’t have to take your puppy out at 5am. It is a dramatically underrated practice, very clean and doesn’t smell (way better than a cat litter box, IMO), makes traveling with a small dog easier - there are so many advantages for any small dog owner, let alone an apartment dweller. Most importantly, it in no way prevents or limits outdoor potty training. It actually can prevent indoor accidents and in many ways makes potty training much easier. This forum is the absolute best place to find information on this because so many long time members have successfully refined the system. Indoor potty training prevented my puppy from peeing at the top of the stairs when we were too slow in the morning, and it saved me from waiting around in the snow when he decided he didn’t like going potty in it.

Just wanted to add, if you are used to big dogs, the idea of indoor potty training seems especially strange. whatever you decide, know itís not how you are probably imagining it!

Hi Eva, Thanks for your reply. You were right there is a wealth of info on indoor/outdoor training on the site. Seems like it won't be a confusing as I had feared .
