Rabies shots

My vet says my puppy is due for rabies shots at four months. Yet my pups breeder said to make sure I do not give rabies shots until my puppy is six months old. How long have others waited to give the rabies shots? What age??
Also at what age is Spaying done??

I just had Denverís rabies shot at his 17wk appointment. His shots didnít phase him in the slightest (he had a lick mat with Kong goo, no restraint, when the vet put the needle in, he turned his head to look and went back to the lick mat). He wonít get it again for 3 years.

Iím neutering him between 12-18 months.

Our pup got rabies shot before 6 months. She was due again recently at 1 year so I’m not sure about waiting 3 years. Her next one will be 2 years later, right around her 3 year birthday. We spayed her at 6 1/2 months at our vets recommendation. I know some wait longer but we had Christmas plans getting in the way so we went ahead and did it. We felt bad for her that first day, she was out of it from the drugs and it was hard to watch, but after that all’s been well.

We actually ended up giving it to her at 22 weeks. We followed the Jean Dodds protocol, but one needs to have a certain amount of time between shots, too. Which is why the rabies shots got pushed back a little bit. My vet, a holistic vet, said not to worry cause I was still in the time frame and waiting between shots was better for my dog. She will get her federally mandated 1-year booster, and then after that it will be titers and/or 3-years between rabies shots.

I think it depends on your state. In MA, which is more enlightened than many, the pup must have it before they turn 6 months. We wait until JUST before they turn 6 months. You do need to do what the law says to be in compliance. Also, as far as I know, the one year booster is a federal requirement, not state. So I do not believe that a dog who has only had a puppy shot will be able to go 3 years before getting a booster. AFTER the 1 year booster, they go to 3 year boosters.

Also, how the dog "reacts" to their first rabies shot, especially in the moment, has NOTHING to do with why it should be given at a particular age, and ESPECIALLY whether it should be given in conjunction with other vaccines.
