Puppy coat differences?

My soon to be pup who is a black irish pied (currently 4 weeks) seems to have a smoother coat than his parti littermates. His white chest is getting longer but there seems to be a difference between the coats. Any insight from the experts here?

There are HUGE differences in coats within the breed. All three of mine have slightly different ciats, and they are more similar than many.

There are also often difference even on the same dog. On Panda, her black hair grows more slowly, and isn’t as shiny/silky as her white hair. Kodi’s black hair is shinier and straighter than his white hair, though both seem to grow at about the same rate.

By the time they go home, normal coated Havanese puppies will have "fluffy faces". Short haired Havanese will have a face that looks like a Papillon or a teeny Sheltie, with a very clean muzzle. It's pretty obvious at that age. I don't have a photo of a short hair at going-home age, but here are all of mine at that age.

You said he was about 4 weeks?

I dug up my 4 week pictures. The first is at 4 weeks, the next two were 4 days later. After this was when he really started to fluff up.

Wulfin, this is OT but is that indoor/outdoor carpet you're using in your puppy area? I am always on the lookout for something to use in the whelping box/puppy area that offers traction. raction for growing pups is so important!

Our little Ferdie is 8 months now and she's such a mophead!! Such long and beautifully soft fur, but so easily matted. Her cone from after getting spayed caused horrible matting and the harness we use for her also mats underneath her armpits. Wondering if we need to keep her shorter or get a different harness? Brushing only helps so much...

Coat blowing can last from 8-18 months off and on. It's usually completely over by 2 years. Some are worse than others. Only you can decide what is "too much". It's not a crime to decide to keep them in a shorter puppy cut during that time! If you want to keep them in a long coat during that time, it can take completely, sometimes twice a day, FULL comb outs to keep up with mats. I had two that were "middling hard", though not ANYWHERE near some of the horror stories I've heard here on the forum, and one who was quite easy through this phase.

Pixel was the only one I decided to cut down because her matting became an issue for both of us. I had THOUGHT I'd let her grow back out after, but she's just so darned cute as "the velvet dog" that we've just kept her that way!

Skye gets under arm mats when wearing his EZ-Walk harness. I think it's a combination of his silky hair and still being on the tail end of blowing his puppy coat. I find it best to massage most of the mat out with my fingers before using a brush or comb. Usually after working what seems to be a huge mat with my fingers there is nothing left or just a little mat that I can pick apart with a comb.
