Adding another dog?

I am debating about getting another dog. Little Nala seems quite happy to be a spoiled only dog but I think it could be good for her to have a friend. She tolerates the other havanese I babysit but I can't say for sure if she is happier with or without them. She has come a long way since we first got her and she was scared of everything but she is still a shy dog. I have done tons of socialization and training with her and seen lots of improvement. I think having a mellow secure dog could really help her. When I babysit and walk a dog with her she seems more brave and secure.

Am I overanalyzing this? I have been in contact with a woman who has a rescue TT mix that is very laid back. Nala is pretty alpha and seems to prefer the laid back males where she can be bossy and in charge.

I haven't met the dog yet I am still in the analytical phase. Our life is pretty easy now. I take Nala a lot of places and travel with her and my husband works at home so she isn't alone a lot. But I have often thought of having two dogs. Many of my friends say getting another dog was great. We have an active and dog-centric lifestyle so that won't be an issue.

Any thoughts?

One the one hand I think your statement is telling. Most of the Havanese I've seen "love" another Havanese and will play quite happily. To "tolerate" may mean that Nala really is happiest when she is the focus of your attention.

On the other hand, I think any dog will figure out their social order when placed into a multiple dog household. So slowly adding another dog to the mix will most likey be a good thing.

I would probably go for it myself.....

Cheers!

I say yes. I think you'll see a big difference in her (after the initial getting to know you and are you sure this dog is staying phase). As for you and your DH, I think you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Thanks guys. Maybe "tolerate" wasn't quite the right word in the first post. When we babysit the dogs will usually be together in the house, on the bed, or the couch or peeking over the steps together and they certainly like to sniff the same things together outside.

She just doesn't run around and play at the house with them or seem excited. It might just be her personality...she is 5 years old, a little bossy and alpha. And adorable!

His name is Barney and I like it. If I get him I might call him Barnes.
