Mats

I’m pretty sure he’s blowing his puppy coat though he isn’t losing any hair (how does this work?) but he mats soooo easily, particularly in his white fur. I’m working on getting a grooming appointment but with the holidays it’s been a good month and a half. I gave him a bath today and gave up combing for his sake and my own sanity. I’ve been working through them with cornstarch. I’ve tried his spray leave in conditioner. I’m not wanting to go with a short puppy cut in the dead of winter but I might have to just to avoid shaving him! Ugh. Any advice?

Know it gets better! Just when all of the grooming is all worked into your daily routine and you are really feeling confident in it, heíll need less of it, lol!

You may already be drying along with the combing after his bath, but I didnít always have time to blow dry and I noticed that some of the dematting/detangling sprays really work better with warmth from the dryer. The hair dryer also seems to dislodge loose hair that I didnít even see. Itís so dry where I am I really didnít plan to blow dry because even in the winter he dries on his own super fast. But, it did help more than I expected when he was blowing coat. I personally think it distributes and activates detangling products better, smooths the hair so it tangles less in the days after the bath, and it blows out loose hair. Now that Iíve had more practice, I even think itís faster to dry my Havanese than it is to blow dry my 13 year oldís hair when she asks me to! In the winter I have to bathe him more even though heís outside less, otherwise his legs mat like crazy from the snow. Last winter when he was blowing coat it was something like every 5 days. This year is much better as long as I keep up on his legs, and I did at first, but not so much the last couple of weeks!

Oh and I think the new hair can start growing in before they actually start losing, so if youíre already combing him every day what youíre describing makes sense if the density is increasing. But maybe Iím confused because I read so much about blowing coat during that time and itís all scattered around in my brain now! I do know each puppy is A little different.

It is confusing! I feel like he must be by a year old, though very little hair is falling out. I do blow dry which helps a little. I think maybe I should have more than just the pin comb. I also use a 2 in one shampoo/ conditioner. Maybe he needs a separate conditioner to help detangle?

When Tucker blew coat, (each time,) I had to totally comb him out at least 3 times a day. Just sayin'.

In addition to the baths that I had to give him every week to help a bit, too. It was a challenge.

I feel so bad, but he's getting used to it. I do my best to hold it away from the skin and work on it so it doesn't hurt him. This feels like an impossible endeavor. I may start by fully combing through the non-matted parts once a day because I'm making such little progress. By the time I get through one, he's DONE

My groomer said we just had to make it to 18 months, and she was right. She mats much less now than she did as a puppy. I went through a lot of that spray-on conditioner when she was little. Hang in there!

blowing coat occurs around 18-24 months. It is when the puppy coat is replaced with the adult coat. During that time, the coat mats a lot. I was brushing Lu out 2-3 times a day. but it passes and you end up with a beautiful pet.
