The trick is to get the lighting so that you can still see the sparkle in their eyes! ;)

Patti got a hair cut yesterday. Her white mouth is always to the ground and stained but it's nice to not have food and wet from the water bowel in her long mustache, beard and ears.

When taking pictures, focus on the Eyes and add lighting when taking a picture of dark skinned people and black dogs. Trying turning the flash on, on your camera or the iPhone when taking a picture of a black dog, if you don't have good outdoor lighting. Not strong sun light that produces dark shadows. Overcast outdoor days are usually good. Get down to the dogs level or sit them on something ... focusing on the eyes.

I was on one knee, level with Patti to get this shot.

Pretty as a picture. Good Job! Photo software would probably lighten and remove shadows in the first picture, highlighting the hair and making those pretty brown eyes show up.

I'll add: Using a Flash when shooting outdoor pics often brightens the eyes, face and hair and works well during overcast days.
