SA followup

well, to make a very long story short, Django has had SA for months, we brought in a highly qualified and recommended vet who is a behaviorist and makes housecalls. we are working on djangos SA issues and she said one of the goals is to get him to eat while we are one. this keeps him busy and hopefully overtime forgets he's left alone.

anyways, with all his issues i am very limited with what can go in his kong. i have been putting his ground turkey or deli turkey and when i return, he hasn't touched the kong. o have to set up video each time to monitor his behavior and as soon as i leave the barking etc starts. he sniffs his kong for a moment but that's it.

can anyone offer suggestions for their kongs? he can't eat peanutbutter, cheese (not that much) he has been allergies and won't eat any kind of vegie.
plus, we are still in rehab mode from him chlostridium so we aren't eating kibble yet, just our GI canned and ground turkey.

Can django eat yogurt? I would mix the ground turkey with sOme yogurt (and you don't need that much) and freeze it. Or,can django eat raw turkey? I can't imagine he could resist raw ground turkey! Again if you freeze it it last longer and is less gross.

yogurt is a hit or miss, lately it's a miss. raw ground turkey is too gross for me plus, with all his issues i think i am going to stick to deli turkey. i have frozen turkey kongs in the freezer and fresh turkey as well.

truth be told, i can put anything in that kong and when i walk out the door he has no interest. i am hoping as his appetite improves his love for kongs will as well. right now we are at 90% canned food specifically for GI and 10% ground turkey.
hopefully by tuesday i can start introducing his regular canned. slowly but surly we will get there!

I have to agree with you. I don't think the kong will help all that much. If he is that stressed, food generally doesn't work. Your trainer has to work on desensitizing . Kongs are great at helping a new puppy learn to entertain themselves and thus make the departure a little easier. The kong won't hurt ,but is not going to make a significant difference. Nichole Wilde has a new book out on this. But you probably need your trainer for any sort of help in this case. Keep us posted. One thing at a time. Get his eating down first and then work more on this. Keep us posted.

I like suzi's idea best. But from I've read here it does not always help dogs with separation anxiety.
