At what age did you neuter/spay your dog?

The topic about appropriate age to neuter/spay comes up frequently on HF. I am curious about the experience of HF members. Attached is a poll to survey the results of HF members. The results of this poll SHOULD NOT be a recommendation for anyone as to an appropriate age. Each dog is different and goals and objectives for each dog are different. It is always best to consult with your Vet before making this important decision.

I am allowing members to vote more than once to accommodate those who have more than one dog, which may or may not be a Havanese.

I think this will be interesting! It would be even more interesting if we could somehow parse out those dogs more than about 5 years old... I would suspect almost ALL of those were spayed/neutered between 6-9 months unless they were planned to be breeding/showing.

Well the deed is not done yet, but it's scheduled, so I entered "12 to 18" months. Under different circumstances it would most likely be older.

Right at 6 months for both of our females. The breeder specifies in the contract as such.

Pippin 2006 - 2019 - Short Haired Havanese
Lani - Born 2018 White Parti
Lila - Born 2019 Red

Just wanted to mention that most breeders will allow you to modify this if you talk to them about it ahead of time, and explain that your reasons for wanting to extend it are for health concerns. Very few won't let you. Their concerns are people who will be careless and let the dog become pregnant. Someone who is concerned about what is the very best for the health of their pet is very unlikely to let them get pregnant by mistake.

So, if it is important to you, don't be afraid to talk to the breeder about it!

We did that for Lani. Our schedule wasn't allowing us time for her to fully recover after spaying. The procedure was delayed for a few weeks. We have a good rapport with Julie, the breeder.

Perfect!

BTW... So happy to have some short hairs represented here again! I love them! We need photos! Your sig line says they are red and white, but your avatar is a black dog (also cute) Let's see your cute Havis! <3

We had Shama spayed when she was 13 months old. We had been told to wait until after her first heat in order for her bones (?) to fully mature so she would be strong for agility. She will be five years old in June.

I was reluctant to get Becky spayed but have just had it done at aged 3 and a half as she was getting a false pregnancy after each season.
