Does your Havanese lick you constantly?

Jessie is 1 1/2 years old...she is totally house broken...walks beautifully on her leash, obeys most commands. However, there is one trait that bothers me. Not sure if itís part of the bread, or just her MO. Anyhow, she will lick my feet, legs, arms, hands...any part of me that she has access to. She licks and licks, and licks...if I donít move away or scold her, she will continue non stop. Is this just something Havanese do...never had a dog of various breeds that would lick this much! Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful!

Just curious if you have any type of lotion on you? I use coconut oil as a moisturizer and if I am around Mia after applying it she will lick me. She loves coconut oil! Otherwise, she licks me sometimes but not excessively.

In my opinion, it is something you are putting on your skin. Ricky rarely licks anyone, including me, unless there is something enticing on the skin. I notice that he is enticed by a little sweat even.

It is not a "breed thing" but it IS a "some dog" thing. And it can get obsessive. Sometimes (though not always) it is anxiety related. In our Pixel, it is anxiety related. She HATES it if anyone sneezes, and THAT will send her into a paroxysm of licking, preferably the sneezer, but if she cant get to THAT person, whoever is close enough. She also would LOVE to "over-greet" with "licky-licks". It took a while, but we DID train her not to, by allowing a strict "two lick limit", followed by the cue, "no more licky licks!" She doesn't like it, but she complies. It took time and absolute consistency, but NEITHER of us like the licking.

Panda occasionally gets into "grooming" type licking (especially after I've applied lotion to my forearms) but is easily redirected, so that is really not a problem.

Kodi has always had the most adorable "kisses", IMO. You hold out ONE finger, and say, "Give me a kiss?" and he will give you one little lick on the end of your finger.

My DIL's mixed breed is also an "anxiety licker", but as a rescue, she doesn't have a specific trigger, like Pixel's. She just comes in hot, if she can get at your face, she will smother you. Or if not your face, your legs. (she's short, though not small) We are working with her now tho teach the "two lick limit". Work in progress. Not there yet!

Willow is a licker but it's licking herself. I swear she grooms herself like a cat. Drives me nuts sometimes. In addition to that, she licks her privates every time she pees. She marks a lot when we walk and every time she marks she has to stop, sit down and lick her privates. I don't know if it's to clean or what. She licks her feet which are now stained with saliva. Inside the house she'll like her privates and it can go on forever it seems. I sometimes get tired of it and will redirect her. That works but I usually have to do it several times before she quits. She used to take Apoquel and that helped but I worried about that drug and discontinued using it. I've been considering asking the vet to put her back on it.

I would worry that that much self-licking was either a sign of itchiness or else a habit that needed to be interrupted.

I assume where you live it is damp much of the time? We have times of the year with high humidity and dampness. During those times, I try to be extra diligent in keeping the paw fur trimmed up. Same with private areas. Otherwise, these areas stay damp which can cause some issues. The fur on the paws needs trimming every few weeks in my experience. Not sure if this is your problem but thought it may help. I would be worried about long term effects of Apoquel. I know a few people who have worked with holistic vets to get to the root cause of itching.

The vet thinks Willow's itchiness is due to our damp climate. I do think he is right as in the summer when we were camping in the dryer part of our state, the licking mostly stopped. Benadryl really didn't do much except make her lethargic. She has also been on Cytopoint but it really didn't do much. Whatever she is on the vet thinks that it would only be for the wettest part of our season.

I use Eucerin Original Lotion and my previous(not Havanese) dog would hunt me down to lick it when I put it on my legs. A friend uses it too and he used to do the same to her.
My Hav will lick the floor where I've walked right after I've put it on but he doesn't lick me. Maybe the mineral oil.

In addition to keeping paw fur trimmed, foot soaks can be very helpful. I do not bathe my dogs very often but we do foot soaks, usually with just plain water. However, here are some other things to try if they are really itchy.
