It is not a "breed thing" but it IS a "some dog" thing. And it can get obsessive. Sometimes (though not always) it is anxiety related. In our Pixel, it is anxiety related. She HATES it if anyone sneezes, and THAT will send her into a paroxysm of licking, preferably the sneezer, but if she cant get to THAT person, whoever is close enough. She also would LOVE to "over-greet" with "licky-licks". It took a while, but we DID train her not to, by allowing a strict "two lick limit", followed by the cue, "no more licky licks!" She doesn't like it, but she complies. It took time and absolute consistency, but NEITHER of us like the licking.
Panda occasionally gets into "grooming" type licking (especially after I've applied lotion to my forearms) but is easily redirected, so that is really not a problem.
Kodi has always had the most adorable "kisses", IMO. You hold out ONE finger, and say, "Give me a kiss?" and he will give you one little lick on the end of your finger.
My DIL's mixed breed is also an "anxiety licker", but as a rescue, she doesn't have a specific trigger, like Pixel's. She just comes in hot, if she can get at your face, she will smother you. Or if not your face, your legs. (she's short, though not small) We are working with her now tho teach the "two lick limit". Work in progress. Not there yet!
