Grooming, nails, anal glands during Covid-19 shutdown

I thought it might be useful to start a separate thread for tips, links to videos and ideas on how to deal with grooming issues for all of us under shelter in place orders. We have had a mobile groomer for Cassie every eight weeks for her puppy cut. I can handle the cut, even if she turns out a little weird, but nails and anals I may need to watch a video. Our groomer worked out of our vet office before she joined a mobile service (we followed her to the new service) so we totally trusted her to do the anal glands which is a task that you donít want to leave to just anyone...but many small dogs like ours need help sometimes.

I used to think regular walking kept nails down, but doesnít work as well for small dogs who donít have the weight to do it that way.

So if anyone has links to good videos on these subjects, use this thread. I will look for some myself.

Nails are one thing but anal glands would scare me. Neither of my dogs have ever needed that. I assume vets do take patients if need be. I guess it is a good thing to learn though if your dog has that problem.

My vet taught us how after we had to take our puppy in a few times because his glands were bad. It was helpful when our puppy was crying at 5am on a Saturday and scooting all over the carpet. However, I still think it’s worth taking him to the vet for. Even my husband, the official emptier, would agree, because it’s just so awful! My vet doesn’t consider it a full appointment if he knows the dog, it’s just a small fee and an arranged drop in visit.

Anal glands is not something I would ever let a groomer do. Most dogs do not need it done regularly, and the more it is done, the weaker the muscles get, making them more and more dependent on it. (that according to not only my own vet, but several others I've talked to also)

There are a FEW dogs whose anal glands are misplaced, and these DO need to be emptied professionally. But these, in particular, should be handled by a vet, not a groomer. (sometimes the glands in dogs like this eventually need to be surgically removed)

Kodi has twice in his 11 years needed his anal glands emptied, and both were when his allergies were out of control, and it was done by the vet. The vet said it was not unusual for anal glads to become inflamed and full from allergy problems. Once his allergy problems were under control, he has never had another problem with his anal glands either. Neither of the girls have either had their anal glands touched.

As for the other stuff, I'm sorry I didn't see this until now. I clipped Pixel's nails and trimmed her (puppy cut) feet last night as well as trimmed her sanitary area, and today I bathed Panda, trimmed her feet (show coat) and dremeled her nails. I would have been happy to set up my phone on a tripod to tape. I haven't done Kodi yet, so if I have time, I'll set up the phone to video him when I do him, though that will be long, since he needs a whole trim as well as feet and nails. (I dremel him too, and he's not as polite as Panda )

This is really interesting to hear! Mine had anal gland problems as a puppy, and I could tell in part it was diet related because he had a tendency toward soft stool. I just thought it wasnít the right food for him. Between changing food and stopping Heartguard (which gave him terrible diarrhea), it resolved and I canít even remember the last time we had to empty them. Before that I wondered if he had food allergies, but there hasnít been an urgent need to identify it because it comes up so rarely. There is an ingredient in a few packaged treats that doesnít agree with him, and I havenít been able to figure it out. I learned more about ingredients in treats and now I donít ever buy low quality treats, which does help, but it still occasionally comes up. Elimination diets are just such a huge pain.

The breeder we just got our 2 pups from said she never expresses their glands since their stool which is well formed usually takes care of that normally. I have always gotten my maltese and other dogs use to the nail clipper at a young age with a tiny treat and praising.

I forgot until I’d already trimmed Kodi’s feet to get out the phone to try to video. OK, you guys... don’t laugh at me. I am NOT a YouTuber, and don’t play one on TV. Btu I said I’d do this to try to help some of you who might want to see how to do some of this at home.

I chose Kodi as my “model” because he’s sort of in the middle. He’s fairly cooperative, but not like Panda, who practically does it for me. Nor does he make it too difficult. I realized when I listened, that there is a lot of barking in the videos. That is NOT Kodi! LOL. You have to remember that we have 5 dogs in the house! And please excuse my hair... that’s what happens when you are stuck in the house with nowhere to go... you don’t bother doing your hair! And the video quality? You get what you pay for!

This first one is trimming the paw pads using a small cordless trimmer: https://youtu.be/_sQtjol22hc

This one is trimming nails with a dremmel: https://youtu.be/bkXo3r-P4F8

And this one is the end of dremmeling and doing his dew claws with the resco clippers: https://youtu.be/Bc-j2rEC8fg

I started out planning to trim Kodi all over. But by the time I got his feet face and sani done, he looked so cute, I decided he was done, and that he could go another couple of weeks before I clipped him again! He had absolutely no knots in his coat when I bathed him, and he hadn’t had more than a quick comb out a couple of times during the week and a half since his last bath. So I think his coat is holding up fine at this length.

P.S. Kodi sez, he thinks he looks pretty spiffy for an almost 11 year old!

Karen, thanks so much for the awesome grooming videos! I usually have my husband hold them for nail trimming but I have been wanting to phase my husband out of the picture so I can trim nails whenever I want which is fairly often. It was helpful to see how you positioned Kodi for nail trimming. My most difficult foot to work on is always the right front.
