What a scare today!

We take a morning walk up the street and back, no matter the weather, and when we get back to the house we stop at the end of our long driveway. There the boys sit and I take their leash off and on mark, set, go, they race to the house
As the boys finished their run and stopped for their final potty - that is when I saw it out of the corner of my eye
This is a HUGE hawk! He came swooping in and landed on the light pole above the dogs (they had the cover of the bushes!). Needless to say I started hollering, flapping my arms, jumping, screaming and running as FAST as I could towards him! Of course, the dogs thought I had lost my mind, but at least it did scare the hawk and he took off in the opposite direction and the boys went to the door - WHEW!
I knew he had returned this week to the neighborhood and have been watchful each day, and did check this morning when we went out, which is when he is usually lurking for his morning meal I guess. But I guess he saw them running and thought "snack"
So needless to say, I am now watching them "like a hawk" He can eat all the rabbits around here, but he is NOT getting my boys!

yeah these guys have been known to take small dogs. It is a worry. We've had trouble with coyotes lately. One almost got a chihuahua here lately, but it survived when the owner finally scared it off , and it released his little guy. Glad you are on the ball. And thanks for the reminder.

Oh, yikes! I don't even want to think about a hawk carrying one of our babies off. One reason I like Augie in all his hair - makes him look at least twice the size he actually is. Does anyone know what weight or size a dog would need to be that a hawk wouldn't be tempted? So glad you were watching and were able to frighten him off, hutsonshouse.

That is so terrifying. Thank goodness we don't have that threat here. I can imagine the terror when you saw it.

I wish I had the video of that. Seriously, that must have been very scary for you. Glad the pups are OK.

"Does anyone know what weight or size a dog would need to be that a hawk wouldn't be tempted?" Let's just say Linda, that I have seen a Red Tail Hawk kill a ten to twelve pound jack rabbit. .

I worry about hawks, too. The local pair had two babies last summer. The juveniles still are around. They hunt together.

I think Jack is too big to be carried off. I think hawks can carry half their weight (only a couple of pounds) . However, hawks can do serious damage by smashing the prey to the ground. Their talons would kill our little guys. If the prey is too big to carry off, they would eat it on the ground. Gruesome, I know. On a more positive note, they usually only kill during dusk.

Jack doesn't go out by himself.... ever.

TTFN,
Pam
