Ideas for strong chew drive

Eli has an incredibly strong chew drive. About the only thing he won't chew on are shoes, thank G-d! Everything else is pretty much on the table. He will steal and chew whatever he can find. We need to keep things like gloves, pencils/pens, mail, wires, under clothes, you name it....out of his reach. The only thing that seems to hold his attention are flossies and <gulp> pigs ears. These are pretty caloric so I hesitate to give them to him daily. I haven't found any toys that he want to chew on. I spend the day chasing him or picking up the most unbelievable stuff he's found to chew on. Granted, with it being cold we don't go on long walks so he does have an over abundance of energy he may be trying to satisfy. He's 8 months so I think he has his adult teeth and this is not a symptom of teething. Any suggestions to satisfy his chew drive would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a Kong stuffed with taste treat? To train sensible chewing.

Clare - The Kong occupies him for only about 10 minutes. I freeze yogurt or cream cheese so he spends a few minutes licking it until it's clean and then gives me the "now what?" expression.

Natalie - He doesn't seem to like nylabones or any other synthetic chewy. That boy is no dope. It's like small kids and cell phones and tv remotes, somehow they know the real deal from the fake ones we want to give them to play with. LOL

Well, you might just walk around petsmart. They have tons and tons of things and a lot of them are for vigorous chewers. Maybe something that has cloth on it. ...I think they are called 'wubba' ( made by the kong co.) Maybe the people that work there can give you some ideas too!

I just gave in and now order flossies by the hundred. The good news is that he doesn't chew on anything around the house (except stray napkins) and lately he has slowed down and now chews fewer of them. I also give him beef tracheas (ugh). His weight is fine. Giving in seemed like the least stressful option to me.

The deer antler is a really hard to chew up. Some dogs love them and some don't.

The dinosaur-shaped nylabones are great. Our dogs prefer them over the regular bone-shaped nylabones. The stegasaurus lasts longer than the brachiosaurus. They don't have the rubbery smell that the kong toys have.

Pam
