I can see that REY is already la reina of your household. Welcome to the world of Havanese, they change your life irrevocably. She looks so much like Ricky in the small economy size. She has only been with you, what 2 days now?, and "cuidado" she already has you twisted around her little paw!

That's the truth, but that face!

My daughter will have to learn not to hold her too much. Thankfully, Rey has responded pretty quickly when told "no" to things, like walking in the garden and chewing one of my papers.

We found that "NO" never works well with Ricky. It is too common a word especially when confused with "KNOW." What works well with us is something unique like "EH EH." But what works even better is redirection. When he is doing something we don't want him to do, we give him something more interesting to do, like throwing and retrieving his favorite "Teddy Cow" toy.

Regarding chewing on paper products and cardboard..................that is pretty much a lost cause with a Havanese puppy. The only way to prevent that is putting those products out of reach at all times. That includes the roll of toilet paper, always keep the bathroom door shut or you will regret it.

REY is going to do just fine. Out of curiosity, how much does she weigh?

About 8lbs right now. Her breeder targets the true height standard of 9-10-1/2 in, so we expect her get to only 9 or 10 lbs. Teeny-tiny!

All dogs mature at different rates, just like humans. Ricky was 9 lbs at 9 months and when we brought him home, our Vet thought he was a bit underweight for his physical structure. He didn't stop growing until he was 15 pounds at 18 months. where he is today.

Oh, wow! I didn't know they would continue to grow for that long. That's OK, her size doesn't really matter to us. I just want her to be small enough to fit under an airplane seat. We don't travel a lot right now, but I expect her to be around into our retirement.

It varies. REY could be full grown at 9 months, but who knows, usually the breeder is closer to right than someone like me on the Internet. I'm just saying be prepared for anything.

Ricky fits into a Sherpa brand canine carry-on under an airline seat. When they get close to 20 pounds, that's when it gets tough. We always fly the same airline when flying from California to Mexico. We fly with him 2 to 4 times a year. Often it is the same flight crew. They know Ricky by name (they have no idea who I am other than some lucky guy who has a Havanese family member) and they know he doesn't cause any problems on a flight, no barking or whinning, sits quietly and he is always a spic and span clean fluff ball. They usually say. "let him out of that bag." He is then allowed to sit on my lap or on a seat adjacent to us if one is available. I'll bet you half the flight attendants are dog owner/lovers!

Be prepared to be the center of attention when you have a Havanese in tow - from little children to aged seniors. Havanese are super star people magnets. When I take him to Home Depot with me (always in a shopping cart), it is not uncommon to be stopped half a dozen times by people to interact with him (and that includes the store staff who know him by name). It's not easy being a Havanese parent!
