our little predator

A while back, the message to southern members about watching out for predators, made me think about how, in our neighborhood, it is Shama who is the predator.

You should see Shama chase rabbits in our fenced-in back yard. She never catches them, but it's always a good chase. (They go out the little hole they dug under our fence gate. I've never tried to block it because I figure they'll just dig another hole. I've never seen Shama attempt to fit through it. She just sniffs it.)

She also has occasionally chased a chipmunk. She runs after squirrels as they dash across the top of the fence. Birds don't affect her ... unless they land on the ground within her sight.

On April 29, a little bird flew into our sliding glass door. At first it was lying on its side, but then it hopped upright, sending Shama into a frenzy. It eventually hopped out of her sight, then it eventually flew off the deck. I'm going figure that bird was eventually as good as new. Here's the video of Shama going berserk.

I've been meaning to post this video since April ...

Molly does the same thing where she paws at the window when she sees something she wants to get at. She is really disturbed when she sees a bird, squirrel, or bunny in the yard and sometimes requires a “time out” if she won’t settle down. She would love to be able to catch one! The other night when I took her out in the yard just after sunset we saw a cute little bunny and almost jumped out of my skin when a large bird of prey flew out of my little tree right in front of me as it tried to catch it! Judging by the wingspan it looked like it could have been one of our resident eagles but it was a little too dark to be sure.

I haven’t seen any around our neighborhood, although we did have a snowy owl a few years ago. We have mostly different kinds of eagles, hawks, and vultures. Whatever it was, the wingspan was huge!

Mia is also a serious predator. She is always on leash outside (have no fence) so she cannot chase rabbits or birds, but she hunts moles, lizards and field mice. I currently have a bird nest on the ceiling fan of my porch with baby birds in it. I am trying to limit the predators time out there until they fly off. They like laying right underneath the fan! Yikes...one of the poor babies could fall in their mouth. Mia got her first mole of 2020 last week and my yorkie had not gotten one yet this year. Boy was he mad. How could a female non-terrier get a mole before him?

I’m sure the bird shook it off if it flew away! Shama is feisty! I love it! Brad is hoping Harley will chase the bunnies and squirrels out of our yard when she gets bigger! Right now she is into chasing leaves. 😂

Can we borrow Mia! We thought the gophers found another home after getting artificial turf. This year they have found the petunia's. Last week DH saw a gopher head pop up and then a petunia vanished. Several have gone missing. Today he planted the replacements and covered the soil with cayenne pepper. 🤣

If she is like mine, she will invite the rabbits in so she can eat bunny poop! LOL!

Mia would love to help you out I am sure! The neighbors have asked to use my “mole service”. I am not familiar with gophers but thought they can get quite large. It is frustrating to watch beautiful landscaping being destroyed by critters! The critter that has totally devastated my yard this year is deer!!! My hydrangeas were beautiful and almost every blossom is gone. The supposed deer resistant sedums have been mowed down. They have never touched my cone flowers before and now they are getting them. Luckily I put bird netting over my hostas which is very effective so managed to save most of them. The deer even eat my stuff while staring at me!!!! But then I see all the cute baby fawns and my heart melts...
