Concept training

I had the opportunity to see a lecture with Ken Ramirez (who now heads the Karen Pryor Academy) on “concept training” and it really intrigued me. The idea is, that we have known for some time that dogs can learn nouns (the names of over 100 different toys) and verbs, (all Utility level obedience dogs and sports dogs have extensive vocabularies of “action word” cues) but could they also learn modifiers, like “small and large” or right and left” and can they ALSO generalize those concepts beyond specific circumstances? Look Ken up on YouTube... you’ll see some amazing stuff!

With Kodi laid up with his shoulder injury, I thought that some sort of concept training would keep both of us from going stir crazy, without taxing him physically. I first thought I’d start with “right and left”, since he is already familiar with the idea of following my point from directed jumping and directed retrieve in obedience, as well as off-leash walks in the woods, where he will take my direction at forks in trails. But then I found out that Fenzi Academy was offering a class called “Match to Sample”. This is a MUCH harder concept to teach a dog, but hey, I figured I’d learn a whole lot about the PROCESS of concept training! So... Kodi and I jumped in.

No titles or ribbons for this work, but I am thrilled with what he has learned in a couple of weeks. He has clearly got the idea of matching what I hold up to what is on the table. Now we need to slowly add more items and complexity to the picture. But I thought you’d enjoy seeing my clever boy work.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

I am certain mine understands some complex ideas, but I feel like I can’t quite wrap my mind around how to break it down so I can use that information. I love the Match It game! Sometimes I see training and I think it’s fun to watch, but it isn’t something I’d enjoy working on, or it would take a lot of work to get my Havanese interested in it. The matching skill seems like a very natural progression based on his current strengths, and I think it would be a lot of fun to explore! It was inspiring to see you and Kodi I wanted to do some Fenzi classes this summer but I’m way behind on other stuff. Maybe when my kids go back to school (if they ever go back to school Or maybe I’ll just lock myself in the basement with Sundance....

Really amazing, Karen! Not one error in the three minutes we watched! Thanks for sharing!

I especially liked the long skinny table you just happened to have on hand ...

His Grandma Twinkle would have pulled that rug he had to sit on closer to where the treats were coming from.

That's really cool! I've seen some videos where they learn the name of an item and can pick that item from a group of items. Haven't seen them use the match concept before. Really interesting! By the way, are you giving multiple treats or letting him bite off pieces of a bigger treat? Just curious!
