Cash thinks he is a Beaver

I know Derek posted a thread on wood chewing--- but I thought this deserved it's own thread. As you know both my boys have done some damage to bottom of doors and some furniture... I have been very diligent with the bitter apple and thought I had trained them out of this behavior---

Yesterday, I come home from a doctors appointment (only gone for 2 hrs) and cash is on his chair chewing a stick---"where did that stick come from" says missy "hmmm it looks too smooth to be from outside"

On inspection, Cash (we assume) has been sitting under these wicker chairs we keep in the sun room and chewing the support beams in the chairs (jasper doesn't sit under low things) This was an inch thick dowel he completely chewed off on both sides..... how long has he been working on this????

We love these chairs! and they don't fit anywhere else in the house. I just turned them over and doused them with bitter apple. luckily it is underneath (sly little boy) so we can just re-support it.

I seem to remember 8-12 months being the friskiest.... but Cash is a real chewer I hope my house survives...

do you think I can give him a piece of 2 X 4 to chew on?

Sneaky little guy! Sorry it was one of your favorite chairs and not something you don't really care about

LOL Sorry Missy I have to laugh at this one, the first thing that came to my mind was when we were sitting out in your sun room in these chairs. Could you have imagine inviting someone over for a havanese play date and they sit in your chair and fall right trough…

I was thinking the same thing.
Maybe it's time for a crate when you're not home Missy.

My dogs love their kennels. If they're tired and want to be left alone, they'll go in theirs by themselves. When I'm not home I know they're safe when locked up.

Missy,

Does everyone walk into your house and taste bitter apple <BG> Dora loved the molding in our old house. We bought 2 bottles of that stuff and covered the molding. The one bottle leaked all over the place in teh grooming box and over a year later, I can taste it everytime I groom them... blah!

Hi Missy:

I'd worry about splinters from a 2x4! But I totally understand your frustration. Lincoln was a huge chewer (molding, drywall, my living room coffee table still has rows of teeth marks...)

I was able to find some good, longer lasting chewies for him from merrickpetcare.com (checkout the snozzles - those last a long time and they cannot break off pieces that they would choke on). We went through lots of bitter apple too - but I found that when it dried, it wasn't as effective anymore

Good luck!

Jane
