Just signed up Bella for puppy kindergarten, lol. Thanks to davetgabby for the info!! I'm so excited for Bella to make some puppy friends and learn some good manners.

Next I'll have to sign her up for typing class lol.

What a cutie! Have fun at puppy class. Lizzie is a puppy class drop out. She was getting car sick on the way there, so we quit. Just started another obedience class and she was the quietest dog there. They were all big and highly energetic breeds except for a chiwennie (SP???) and she did warm up to her.

LOL, puppy class drop out! Poor thing.

This class is limited to 6 puppies and Bella was #4 to sign up. Not sure of the size/breed of the others but I'm hoping there is at least one big dog there so we can get that experience over with in a controlled environment.

My neighbor has 2 small dogs and they are yappers. When they're out and Bella goes out to potty she shakes in her boots from the yapping (and they are separated by a fence).

How is the obedience going?

Hope your class is better than mine was. The instructors were just there and Sophie hasn't learned one thing. Every week another dog dropped out. We started with 8 and ended up with 3. But Sophie had a blast playing with the other dogs, big or small. I'm going to try another class with a different instructor. Your puppy is adorable! Good luck with the class!

Puppy classes should be part play (for socialization) and part training. The training should focus on teaching the new owners AND the puppy how to communicate batter, and how to get and keep the puppy's attention. It is likely that a puppy will have learned "sit" and "down" and the owner will have a reasonable idea of how to continue teaching loose leash walking by the end of a 6-8 week class. that's about all you can expect from that length of time.

Puppy classes are REALLY important socialization opportunities, and they are a good chance to ask about handling problem behaviors that are cropping up at home. It's just not possible to "finish" a dogs obedience training (even pet-type obedience training) in that length of time, or by the age the pups are when they finish the class.

Puppy kindergarten is called "kindergarten" for a reason... it's just the very FIRST step on the ladder to a solid training foundation for your dog. If you get started in a class that you don't think is appropriate, or where you don't like the instructor, by all means move on. But that doesn't mean quit or give up. It means find another place with higher quality instruction. And if a puppy is getting car sick... same deal. You might have to put off PK for a while, but it just means that you have to REALLY work on getting the car sickness under control so you and your dog can more fully enjoy time together.

Well! Before starting puppy kindergarten Roki was car sick all the time and even afraid of the car. he was drolling, vomitig as soon as we turned around the corner. then I decided I will take him to the kindergarten no matter how many times he gets car sick. While driving to first two classes, he threw up, was all wet and messy. But them he realized that classes are fun and that teacher lets them run all over the place. He stopped vomiting and drolling and even jumped to the back seat by himself. Curin carscinnes and car phobio was the best result of his puppy kindergarten.

We have had one obedience class and it was okay. There was a great dane, border collie, lab, lab and border collie mix and the cheweenie. All the dogs know basic commands and last week we worked on getting them to stay while we turned our back from them, not necessarily walking away from them. Lizzie loves the little dogs she knows in the neighborhood. When we are out she is always looking for the little yorkie-bear and terrier, but it took her 45 minutes before her tail was up and would take treats at class. She will come around. As far as our puppy kindergarten class went she was overwhelmed there, too. Even when we saw santa paws at the local pet store. Everyone seems to have HUGE breeds of dogs that are just so hyper and excitable. She really likes her own size. You can tell. I would love to find others here in our city that have Havanese. The funny thing about our puppy kindergarten class is that the only other dog that was absolutely terrified and I think more nervous than Lizzie was a great dane. He would climb on the chair and act like he was hiding.

As far as the carsickness, I really do not believe in meds so sedation was/is not an option. She loves driving to the bus stop the whole half a mile that it is. On the recommendation of a website of someone on the forum I did find a carseat that fits on the console in our van. I do think it helps with the motion sickness, but now she poops right when we get anywhere, so she is still nervous. We are slowly getting there. I know she needs more in the way of socialization this is our first step since the drop out!

Good point! Kodi didn't get MAJORLY car sick, but certainly the first few times we drove to PK, he was nervous in the car, with a lot of drooling. As with Roki, once he found out how much fun it was, that all stopped. Now if you say, "Wanna go to school?" He RUNS to the door to get his collar on then RUNS to the car to get in his car seat!!!<g>

One other thing I just remembered... The initially told us not to feed breakfast before our (morning) class so that the pups were good and hungry, and treat-motivated. I found that if Kodi didn't eat, he was MUCH more likely to get carsick, and vomit bile. Since then, I've learned that small dog puppies are much more prone to low blood sugar issues than big dogs. I suspect that this is what cause Kodi's early car sickness problems. As soon as I made sure he had at least a LITTLE food in his tummy, we had no more car sickness trouble.
