diarrhea back, could it be his food or???

poor Djangos diarrhea is back and so is the bacteria in his little belly. back on flagyl. we have had an issue since the beginning of january and i though we were on the road to recovery. we had an okay week once he was off the ground turkey. his poop was not perfect but good.

he has been eating canned specifically for GI upset and i started introducing, very slowly, his regular canned food. we had 3 good days with better poop and then it was down hill.

diarrhea for 3 days. we had a horrible ice storm so i couldn't get a poop sample to the vet until today. Django was going under the deck and it was impossible to get a sample. got me up 4x last night, really bad runs.

took a sample to the vet and he has a trace of the same bacteria he had a month or so ago. she thought it might be the food. i watch my dog like a hawk. there's no animal poop in his nice dog area outside, when we walk i keep him away from old poop that someone did not pick up, i always pick up his from his dog area. i wash his feet after walks, etc. etc. he's hasn't been around another dog in 2 months due to winter weather. i just don't know what could be causing this and keeping his belly from healing 100%

I am so sorry little Buddy Django's diarrhea problems must be horrible for both of you. Zoey keeps having it about once every other week. I always start by not giving her any food for a meal or two. Then I go on what I call the brat diet brown rice and a tiny bit of no fat chicken broth. I will add chicken breast when the stools start to get better . It will usually clear up by the second day. Caned food is mostly water . Maybe switching back is why he is having problems. Can you just keep him on the special food longer and get more help from a dietitian?

With Zoey I had wondered if it could be the floor cleaner I had been using I try to rinse it of well . I have stopped using chemical on the floor and she has been diarrhea free for about a week now I am still experimenting to see if that caused it. Just a thought

I know that rice is great for diarrhea- as is yogurt. Perhaps consult with your Vet before offering either though just to be safe.

Testing the stool is your best bet. A bacteria could be developing from worms or coccidia or other causes. Could also be a virus, in which case, antibiotics are useless.

My advice would be similar to how I would treat it in humans/children. Ensure the dog is drinking water to keep him hydrated, but perhaps ease up on the food for a day or two to give him a break.

Switching foods too quickly can lead to stomach problems as well. But the key is to rule out any serious underlying causes which requires your Vet's expertise.

Suzi, When Ninja was younger he had a lot of diarrhea problems. I spend so much money at the vet with samples trying to find out whats wrong. We finally realized it was the cleaning chemicals. There are some cleaning supplies that say pet safe or kid safe. That could definitely be the issue with Zoey

So sorry to hear about little Django's tummy problems. The rice always helped my dog's stomach problems. We used to give skinless chicken and white rice for 7 days but that was after a 12 hr break from food. It worked well. I hope Django feels better soon...
