Potty training regression...?

After being outdoor trained for almost two years... yes two years, he has started pooping in the house. Same routine, same food. We will start the potty training all over again, especially being contained at night (when accidents happen), but just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Have NEVER had this happen with any previous dog unless there was a UTI, then it was not poop. To be gross, no diarrhea, just a nice, formed poop...

urrrrr

Sounds like he’s been to the vet, since he doesn’t have a UTI. I think retraining with confinement is a good place to start, because close supervision might help you find a problem that’s leading to accidents.

We had a bit of regression in the middle of covid, and mine is almost 3. I’m not even sure if regression is a fair word, because it was OUR regression, not our Havanese. At the beginning of covid, when all of us were first home, we had a pretty good routine going. Once school was out, we kind of got off track and it was easy for everyone to assume someone else took him out. We didn’t have to back track very far. I just set it up so he couldn’t go upstairs and we went back to a clear schedule where we took turns taking him out more often.

I think it’s important to remember that Covid is affecting all of us, and that affects our dogs too.

Thanks to commentators- we went back to night time confinement (play pen), and a serious look at schedule. Much better now, amazing how making a little change can make such a difference. I need to keep remembering that they do not want to make "errors", but if things go awry, better to catch early. Everyone much happier now!

When Cassie was a puppy, we kept a small notebook by the backdoor to record whoever took her out for a potty break and what “happened”... i.e. pee, poop, or yard sniff. Because different people were taking her out, it allowed us to know how long it had been etc. For reasons I cannot quite explain, we have kept it up and I buy a new day calendar each year to record her bathroom patterns. With multiple people at home during the pandemic, it is a trick that might help others to keep schedules and monitor results.

Such a great idea! For various reasons, our Havanese sometimes only pees when a particular teenager of mine takes him out in the morning. I just try to take him out myself first thing, but the problem is that DS wakes up the earliest and often Sundance can hear him downstairs and is ready to wake up, too. I think this would solve the problem. At least if he doesn’t go “all the way,” I’d know, even if my kids are already at school, and I can take him out again.
