Kokomo and Bailey

Just thought I'd introduce myself since I've been reading all the posts for several days now. Six years ago, we'd never heard of Havanese. Then we went searching for non-shedding breeds--and soon fell in love with Hav's. At that time, we got a black and white Hav. He is definitely spoiled. He has been wonderful, but we always knew that we wanted a second one later on...

So one month ago, we added Bailey (11 wks old) to the family. He is also wonderful, but it is amazing how much I had forgotten about the work required for a new puppy. Bailey is also a mystery--because I can't wait to see how his color changes as he grows. I had assumed he would just get lighter with age, but now he has dark hair coming in down the center of his back.

Since Kokomo is a little over 18 lbs. and Bailey was only 3 lbs when he arrived, I have spent most of my time monitoring their playtime for the last month. Bailey is growing, but still seems tiny next to Koke--and Koke can get a little too rough (in my opinion.) Although, Bailey doesn't seem to mind most of the time. Fortunately, we quickly discovered that Koke doesn't mind sharing his bed or his food and water bowl or most of his toys. However, he is very territorial about his special bone.

Life with two is definitely interesting at this stage. I wouldn't say that they are good friends yet. More of the "patient, but put-upon big brother and a pesty, irritating little brother" situation. But I'm sure that will improve with time (and maturity on Bailey's part.)

I found this forum when searching for grooming info. Because of Bailey's coloring, we hope to avoid cutting his hair. Kokomo has been cut often due to allergies and matting. I wish I had seen this forum long ago. But I have enjoyed all the posts and seeing all the pictures of everyone's beautiful Hav's.

Dena, I'm so glad you fouond us. You'll love it here. There's a wealth of information, more than a modicum of laughter, warmth and caring from a wonderful group of people. Your Kokomo is probably having a little more of an adjustment than some, since he was a singular for so many years. In my world, the little ones brought new life to the older dogs when they joined the family.

It amazes me as well, how tolerant the older dogs were of the babies when they got rambunctious.

Welcome! More pictures please! I am so glad you found us! Are you wanting to groom your Havs on you own?

Bailey went to the vet today and is now 5 lbs. But he definitely needs to work on people socialization skills--he hides behind me and sometimes growls when ever someone comes towards us. A big change to from Koke who nearly broke his neck at the end of the leash trying to rush to anyone who passed by.

I have bathed and brushed Bailey at home so far, other than one trip to the groomer. Kokomo usually has all of his baths at the groomers--about once a month. He hates anything to do with grooming. Both dogs are scheduled at the groomer tomorrow to freshen up (and give me a brief break) in preparation for my parents arriving from SC tomorrow night. I will post more pictures when I can, but with company coming, it'll be either tomorrow or next week.

Thanks for all the welcomes. As I said, I have really enjoyed reading the posts. And I hope to get involved with the quilt activities at some time. (I love quilting.)

The non shedding of hair is a very great trait for a dog like havanese. Unlike other dogs, you wont have any problem when you hug a havanese because no hair will go to your shirt.
