Hello

I am new to the Havanese Forum and glad to be here. In doing some Havanese research online, I came across this great forum.

A little about me ... I have four female dogs (two Havanese, a Toy Fox Terrier, and an American Eskimo) and three cats. I am excited to say that in a couple of weeks I believe we will be bringing home our newest family member, a beautiful female Havanese puppy! My husband and I live in sunny Florida and, to spoil our 4-legged kids rotten, we both work full-time.

I am hoping to join our local Havanese Club here in Florida and also the Havanese Club of America. Does anyone know how to go about that?

Thanks!

Cathy

Hi Cathy - I am Catherine - I live in California...

I am not aware of how to do that...I have my first havanese and he is 13 weeks tomorrow! what a cutie...

You seem to have had a lot of experience with the breed. Ollie is 3 lbs at 13 weeks - any idea how big he might get???

Welcome to the group!!

Hi Catherine -

I am not sure how big Ollie might get ... I am trying to remember how much my 4 year old, Zoe, weighed when we brought her home (she was 10 weeks old), but cannot remember. Today she runs between 10 1/2 to 12 pounds. It varies depending on how much running around the backyard she does, whether she is fully clipped or in a full coat, or if she has just been a couch potato (or if I spoil her with a little extra food)! Our little Emma, a 1 1/2 year old Hav, weighs just a little bit more than Zoe. If you look at the two of them together, Emma looks smaller but she is solid!

I just found out that the puppy I mentioned earlier that I thought we would be bringing home has been sold to someone else. I am so disappointed! I love my Hav's so much and was so excited for them to have a new friend. Back on the hunt!!

Thanks for your welcome!

Hi Cathy,

There is more than one club in Florida. Here is a link to the HCA local clubs page for Florida: http://www.havanese.org/localclub/hcaLocalFlorida.htm

Which club are you interested in joining?

Hi! I would like to join the Tropical Havanese Club here in Florida and the Havanese Club of America. I believe you have to have 2 sponsors to join each club but I'm not sure how to go about getting sponsors. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Cathy!
Someone may have a better suggestion, but here is what I would do.
If you dont know anyone it can be hard. I find the havanese community to be pretty welcoming. I would contact some of the members, maybe through the website. Say you would like to be a member. Maybe try to plan a play date or find out a function you can go to and meet club members. If you make an effort, and get to know some members, Im sure you can get in.

I think the 2 member sponsor is to keep out people who are not trying to better the breed. Otherwise any puppy farm person could get in, and use the club name to promote their kennel.

So meet some members, and if they see you have good intentions, Im sure you can get in. I would tackle the local club first. Then you can meet people there and get in with HCA if thats what you desire.

Im going to Nationals next week. If I meet anybody in the Tropical Havanese Club, I will get more info for you. Im sure Im bound to find someone!

My two best friends live in Florida now, so I will be there more and more.

Good Luck! Its nice to see people who want to be invloved.

Melissa

Melissa -

Thank you so much for the information! I met a gentleman this weekend, who I have been emailing back and forth regarding a show puppy. He is a member of both the local club, Tropical, and the HCA, and is not only going to sponsor me, but is going to mentor me with showing. I am excited. We bring our newest member home tomorrow and I can't wait to post a picture of her for everyone to see!

Brand new also...

Hi to all,

I am a brand new member to this forum...just became a Hav owner 3 weeks ago - an 18 mo old rescue from southern IN, who is now happily getting to know his new world in St. Paul, MN! We renamed our little fella, Barney, and he is beginning to grow some soft-as-velvet hair, after being shaved because of severe matting. He is a "soft" dog...very cautious and reluctant to approach practically anyone at this point. He has velcroed himself to me most of the time (I feed him, take him potty and play with him) and my hubby is trying to win him over as well. He is "sort" housetrained...but loves to use the living room whenever we aren't looking. He doesn't like his crate at all, but quietly allows himself to be placed inside for sleep at night. Our 5 local grandkids all want him to play and respond immediately to their requests to love him...and he has shown no aggression when they pick him up and cuddle for a few minutes...but will not go to them by himself. His "in-house" training will begin soon (had to get through Thanksgiving prep first) because he doesn't come, sit, or do anything much and runs away from even me when I give the "come" or "sit" demand. We aren't used to small dogs, having had 2 goldens prior to Barney...but I have fallen head over heels in love with him and even though the rescue lady has offered me the chance to return him if it doesn't work out...could never even think of doing that at this point!!!! Any thoughts, suggestions etc on behavior that is not the typical havanese would be most appreciated...

cONGRATULATIONS ON BARNEY!! I am sure that once he gets used to his new "forever" home & calms down, he will come to you with no problem. They seem to be such a happy breed & want to please so maybe it is just going to take him a little time to adjust. God know what he went thru before coming to you!! Give him a hug from us Havanes lovers!!

hi Barneys mom, welcome to the forum! Barney will be one of the family in no time. I have a 10 month old male, Cooper and he is such a delight. He loves me and gives me kisses but he adores my husband and insists on spending quality time on his lap. I too had a golden before Cooper, and the breeds are different. I find that the Havanese that I have been around are a little bit more cautious in getting to know someone than goldens generally are, but they are certainly lovers and not normally aggressive at all. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we all want to see a picture of Barney! I'm working on that myself. Welcome again and have fun with Barney!
