A special day is coming......

Hi Guys,

After a few months of debate we are adding another Havanese to our happy house! Lulu is about 14 months and full of life and always wanting to play when she meets up with our friends 2 year old shih tzu. Problem is Bella is only just getting used to playing as for a long time she thought she was human - until she met Lulu.

On Thursday our little boy Pici (pronounced Pitsy) is arriving. He is about the same age as Lulu - which I thought was a good idea as I can't commit to a puppy at the moment.

So I am looking for advice on how I can best introduce them and make the transition from 'only child' to 'loving sibling' as easy as possible. All suggestions and advice welcome. I feel like an expectant mother waiting for baby number 2 and worrying about my relationship with baby 1. I just hope they are happy together. Any advice on toys, sleeping arrangements & feeding would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Lisa

When I added a second Havanese I was told not to feed them together. Have the bowls separated.I felt a little sad for my first "Maddie" It is a big difference having two. And is like adding a second child It may take awhile for them and your family to adjust. My two are still deciding who is the boss Its just like kids!

How exciting for you and Lulu too! It is usually best to have them meet on neutral turf. Can some one bring Lulu to a corner park or even down the street where you could have the new boy? Let them sniff and maybe play for a few minutes and then walk them together, side by side, back to home. That way they enter together.

I have never had a problem introducing a new dog, not to say there won't be any. I just give them their individual bowls of food and monitor it to make sure they stay at their own dish.

I don't think you can really predict exactly how to do it. The dogs work it out by themselves. Just don't try to be to big of a "camp director". If you think they both have good temperaments it should all be great. Lulu will teach her brother the ropes.

Good luck and have fun!!!

Carole
Vinny, Lulu, Gabby and Richie too!

Be yourself, everyone else is taken.

How exciting!!!!! I love happy news. I remember how careful, thoughtful and worried when we added Misty, ha ha the best laid plans go astray! We had unexpected company when we got home!!!!! Nothing went as planned it turned out great anyway. Misty ended up being painfully shy her and Yogi became fast friends, I did have to at times make Yogi leave her alone, he wanted to play, but she needed time and when she was ready...they play all the time.

I do not feed my dogs together, I do feed them at the same time, they eat at a respectable distance from each other. You need to watch food based issues until you know how each dog feel about this.

Good luck (you'll be fine) and pictures.

Robbie, Boo Boo, Yogi, and Misty's human.
Poohkey miss you, monkey.

Thanks guys for all the advice. Things are going to be a little hectic when he first arrives as I have family visiting so not ideal but plenty of people around to keep an eye on them. I will definitely introduce them outside of home. Just very nervous - plus very excited.
