Puppy Food Transition

What age is recommended for transition from puppy food to adult food? Is it 12 months? Poppy turns 1 year old on May 11th. She currently eats Blue Buffalo Chicken/Oatmeal and we plan to transition slowly to Blue Buffalo Chicken/Rice or Lamb/Rice. She is doing great on Blue Buffalo btw.

Also, Poppy currently eats 2x per day 7am and 6pm. We feed her a bit over 1/4 cup for both breakfast and dinner. When you transition to adult food, is it recommended Havanese eat 1x per day? Blue Buffalo recommends small breads 1x per day on their adult food, but I wanted to hear from all the EXPERTS on this site. If 1x per day is recommended, what is the reason for that?

Thanks!

Tim

I have heard that it is okay to start adult food as early as six months. Abby was 8 mos. when we got her and we started her on Blue Buffalo chicken & brown rice for small breeds. I still feed her twice a day because I just think for a small dog once is not enough. She will be four in June and once in a while she only eats one of her meals lately but every time I think about phasing out one of the meals she will decide she still wants both! If she skips a meal occasionally I don't worry about it.

Poppy looks adorable but we need to see more pictures!!!

Cool! Stella will be 4 on May 11

I transitioned Stella to adult food at one year. I free feed her and she eats twice a day usually. I think she eats about 1/3 cup total for the day but it's hard to say when she eats whenever she wants. I just make sure her bowl is full.

Two responses, two completely different answers! I guess to some extent, all dogs are different and each has different needs/preferences. We'll start to very slowly transition Poppy to adult food now, but I think we'll keep her at 2x per day since she is doing well.

We transitioned Kodi around 12 months. He eats twice a day. I don't think he'd like it if he only got one meal... he really looks forward to both! He eats a rounded 1/4c at each meal.
