Havanese Rescue/Volunteer MY Experience

Good Day,

So I signed up for Havanese Rescue last summer, and I know that they completed the background check and also called my references. I was advised that they would conduct a home visit, which was fine with me. So, I recieved a call the week of Thanksgiving for a visit the saturday after thanksgiving for a home visit. I actually had travel plans so that was not a good week. I never heard back from them nor was it rescheduled. I reached out to them again and I recieved a call on Saturday, February 19 for a visit on that day. This would have been fine, except my cousin died the day before and I was not in a good emotional place to have anyone visit me. In fact, I believe I may have been in tears when she called. In anycase, I got the sense that the lady was not that inclined towards visiting my apartment based on where I live, which is the Bronx, based on a comment I heard as she hung up the phone. In addition, she seemed somewhat insensitive when I told her I had a death in the family.

I have not heard back from them and I am very disapointed in my experience. I am an Ivy Grad but chose to live in the Bronx because it affords me the opportunity to save so I can buy a house. Which I am doing this summer.. I got the sense that I was being judged.

Its funny because I have the intention and desire to help the breed and I am an advocate of rescue groups such as this but I guess my experience leaves a lot to be desired.

I hafound a great breeder and maybe along the way I will find another rescue group that supports the breed that way. Given that I began the process last summer, its seems like a long time to wait to be vetted.

I'm sorry your experience was not good. I have read some stories about people who did have good experiences but I had similar experiences as you both times I tried to adopt through a rescue agency. They just didn't really seem interested in getting the dog placed. Hopefully these are the exceptions and not the rule.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience; I have no personal experience with that rescue group. However, I have had a very negative experience with a rescue group locally that is horribly mismanaged and corrupt (I have shared about my experience but have kept the name private for my own reasons).

You sound like a very responsible person and you will be a good havanese owner There are good people here on this board and when you are ready to adopt, whether it is a puppy or older dog, I am sure you will receive support and information here.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. If you are still looking for a rescue, there is a purebred Havanese that was thrown out of a moving van in CT. Her names is Suzy Q.
Sweet, happy, 2 yr. old, friendly, not yet spayed. ADORABLE and through it all, she still likes people.
Fostered in North Haven, CT., and ready for a family who will love and value her.
Email: [email protected] (at deepriveranimalrescue.org) for info on adopting.

I am so glad that this thread was started. I put in an application to the Havanesse Rescue back last fall. I likewise know that my references were checked and all I lacked was the home visit. Course I had the heart surgery. Well while I was recouperating, in a lot of pain, and really depressed, I got a call from them asking me to withdraw my application. I could re-apply when I got better. I agreed and was polite etc hung up and started bawling. My hubby got so mad that if he had known who to call back and chew out he would have. I never knew really what it was about, I guess they thought I was going to die or maybe they didn't like my sense of humor from reading my posts. Anyway, I am done with any rescue organization.

Luciledodd, that is incredibly sad. To receive that news during the time when you were trying to focus your energies on healing is just such a shame. I have no personal experience with this particular group but hearing this has left me incredibly disappointed.

Really really disappointed....what a shame.

I am really sorry that you were upset-I was the lady that spoke to you. We had what I thought was a nice conversation and I was glad to hear the surgery was over. During our talk you stated that you were not recovering the way you thought you should after having surgery so according to you "now is not a good time for me to join HRI"-I told you that I truly understood. You then said you would be glad to reapply at a later date. I did delete your application I had on file because as we all know things change and your references might end up being different that the old ones. I am really sorry you felt we did not want you.

To everyone I hope this clears up some huge misunderstandings. And Lucile I will be looking for your new application.

Havanese Rescue

This really surprises me, because I am a volunteer for HRI and my experience with the others in the group has been very positive. I have found the folks who lead and most of the other volunteers with whom I have interacted, to be very conscientious people who manage to do so much for the breed, despite having jobs and families etc. Many give countless hours and days and some spend lots of their own money helping our little rescue dogs.

I don't know what happened in your case. People aren't perfect and they sometimes make mistakes. I hope that HRI as a group, won't be judged on your experience.

I am very proud to be associated with Havanese Rescue Inc.

In my last post, I was referring to Bellapico's experience.
