Heartworm & So. Cal

So I was going through some of the old threads and it seems to me that most people don't use a heartworm medication in Southern California. Is this true? I am picking up Brutus in 4 days and am just trying to get all the last bit of info and decision making wrapped up. Also if you do need to give HW meds here in So Cal, is it safe to give it to them right away at 10 weeks? Thanks so much for ALL your help! I love this forum, it is so addicting!!!

Well, N. Ca. here, and I do give both dogs a monthly dose of "Interceptor". They seem to be doing fine, and I have the piece of mind that they are protected from all kinds of nasty's. Don't know of any real reason not to provide them with this protection -- and I'd be interested in hearing of any that may exist.

Cheers!

I live in Nor Cal and have always protected my dogs with Heartgard. We have plenty of mosquitos around here so I don't want to take the risk. It's relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of treating a dog that contracts heart worms and the treatment is very painful. My pups have never had an adverse reaction to Heartgard.
Check with your vet when you take Brutus for his well baby visit.
What does your breeder suggest?

Congratulations on your new addition!
