House training

Hi there,
Not sure if this is the correct way to ask a question but here goes. I am a new Hav owner of 1.5 weeks. Our Wee Man is doing great and have not had an accident in the house for a few days now. I know I am good at anticipating him needing out but would like to teach him to tell us. How do we do that. I have heard mention of a bell so is that the way to go and where would I get it.

He may be a little young for it yet but you can try. We use bells for our oldest Hav who is four and we're hoping our little one (3 mos.) will pick it up, too.

I just bought Christmas bells that hang on the doorknob but they do make some that are especially for housetraining. Mine were $1 at Dollar Tree!

You just hit the bells with his paw before taking him out and they generally learn it pretty fast. Of course, they will use it just to go out to play, too!!!

BTW, welcome to the forum! We'd like to see pictures of your little guy and hear more about him! There is a thread called Introduce yourself 2, I think, and that is a good way to introduce yourself to everyone.

I used http://poochie-pets.net/poochiebells and started immediately when I got Stella. I tethered her to me for the first three weeks after she came home and learned to read her signals well. I hung the bells on the door she goes out of and every time I took her out to potty, I tapped the bells with her paw and said, "Go potty." It didn't take long at all for her to learn to use them to ask to go outside. Now whenever we travel, I bring the bells with and hang them on the door I want her to use and show her where they are. I love them and she always asks to go out by ringing her bells.

Here I've been trying to teach Coach to use the bells and I'VE been jingling them... DOH. Next time I'll use his paw.

One thing I would suggest for a little one is to hang the bells really low, maybe almost touching the ground.

We have some of those poochie bells, and Gracie started to learn how to use them (although not reliably). Then one day I was trying to get her to hit it again, and she sort of stood up to swat it, then yelped terribly and pulled away. I guess one of her little nails got caught in the hole in the bell for a split second and freaked her out. She hasn't been very interested in them since, and to be honest I haven't pushed the issue (I may now that she's a little bigger, she could easily hit the bells without standing/jumping up)
