Wee Man

This is regarding socialising my Wee Man. We have a 6 week puppy class starting tonight in my area and I am not sure what to do. Everything I read about small dogs is that early socialising is essentual so as to not cause problems and as we are getting constant rain at the moment its not so easy to set up play dates for him. Wee Man is nearly 12 weeks and has only had his first set of injections. Is this just to risky or does the benefits outway the risks. I would appreciate your opinions.

The benefits far outweigh the risks. Take him!

The benefits out way the risk. I would go to the classes. The thinking on this has changed so much. Many people who show dogs as well as people who do performance sports and obedience, take their young puppies to a show or two with their other dogs just to socialize them a bit and get them use to a crowd. Many of these people have a great deal invested in their dogs, yet they know the benefit.

The trouble, Suzi, is that even though this was YOUR choice, it flies in the face of current knowledge. MANY more dogs are surrendered (and ultimately destroyed) for poor socialization skills than die of puppy diseases every year.

You have admitted that you are having socialization problems with your two because you waited too long before starting puppy classes with them.

Good for you! It is in you puppy's best interests to continue the work your breeder has (hopefully) started, and make sure your puppy learns good social skills during this most sensitive period for socialization!

I would take him. My breeder told me to take Brutus to puppy classes when he turnes 12 weeks. Lots of places will take them as long as they have had their first set of shots, at least my place will.

totally take him! Besides, I'm sure all the puppies there will have had to have some sort of shots in order to BE in the class, right? It is probably a safer enviroment than taking him for a walk on the street even! good luck!

I have been reading an interesting book, about over vacineating our babies and if he has had 2 sets, I am sure that he is protected. And.. as someone else mentioned, all the other pups are probably innoclated as well. The benefits of socialization are SO important!!!
I hope you guys have a great time!!
