going to adult food from puppy

I'm trying to change Zoey and Izzy from Solid Gold puppy food to Solid gold adult food. I'm mixing (actually two differnt adult foods with the puppy food) and they pick out the puppy food! How do I switch gradually if they won't even eat the adult food? Do I gradually take the puppy food out and force them to eat the adult or starve?? I don't want to do the "hunt" for the right food as it gets expensive and my choices are limited around here. I have to travel an hour to get the solid gold, but 20 minutes from here I could get other brands....maybe I should just change brands, but I've been happy with the solid gold.....I don't understand picky eaters..I'll eat anything!!

I went through that with Oliver. I soon discovered it was the size of the pieces that bothered him. I started breaking up the pieces and he ate those.
It took awhile and he started eating it all.
I spoke with the Vet and she thought he was justing quickly searching the bowl for the familiar small sizes. (Like a little kid only wanting to eat what he knows and not try new things)
Good luck.

PS-it was the same brand you mentioned

Sally,((Oliver)) Comet and Pennie too!

Thanks, Sally. I have been breaking up one that's a little bigger and the other new food is WeeBits which is quite small but beef instead of lamb which they are used to. The whole idea of mixing food and gradually changing over goes out the window when they only pick what they are used to!!

Judy- we have went through this too.I switched Quincy to adult at 6 months as the breeder recommended that.Quincy and Vin were eating 2 diff foods, and each wanted to eat the others!Crazy!I ended up with Flint River Ranch and mixed Beneful in there. The breeder said Beneful was ok to feed, but others were better etc. Then they quit eating Flint River Ranch.so now they both eat Beneful weight control.Quincy doesn't need the weight control, but Vinnie does---and Quincy doesn't want to eat anything that Vinnie doesn't.It is difficult to get these quality foods here also.My nearest PetSmart is 2 hrs.away.It would not make sense for me to drive 4 hours for dog food...you might want to try beneful or mix alittle in..?Just a thought...

I'm hoping that the transition for Radar is quite seamless. he's been getting rather picky sometimes with his eating from day to day.......

When I spoke to my Wife the other day she was at her Gramma's place she told me that Radar hadn't been eating his breakfast. Well I asked her to add some eggs to his food. He doesn't seem to even responsd to the cheese anymore that much.

We're gonna pick up the powdered eggs or the egg beaters in the carton that way we can regulate the amount he gets so we don't go overboard with the amount we give him because as we all know too much of a good thing is still too much...right.

Beamer is not eating much either these days...
He is soooo over yogurt..cheese....even hotdog bits dont interest him like they used to! Everyone that knows Beamer cannot believe that he does not eat his meals.. they say "wow, never seen a dog that won't eat before!" Then they laugh at us.. lol

Yeah Radar quickly seemed to get over the novelty food items such as the cheese and he'll eat the yogurt and cheese just not on his food someties. He'll pick through the food to get to the "good stuff".

The only thing that seemed to keep his interest is the Eggs. He loves them and will quite possibly do anything for them. I am weary abourt giving him a whole yolk a day but a half a yolk seems to be reasonable enough which is why I want to buy them powdered.

Derek- Egg Beaters is made only from the white of the egg. Egg whites often give dogs diarrhea. Plus, it has no cholesterol. I may be mistaken, but I thought the reason for giving eggs was because Havanese have very low cholesterol. In any case, the powdered egg yolks work well, since they don't have to be refrigerated. Plus, you can use them in cooking if you run out of eggs!

They have a type that are made with the yolks as well. I would use those more than the egg white based ones.

You Know what I was wrong...... The Egg Beaters is actually the Egg White only...sorry about that...they are yellow so I thought they were the Egg yolks....they Colour the Egg Whites to make them look like yolks with Beta Carotene I think it is.
