other forum

I will have you know I almost got thrown out of another forum for talking about dogs and GOOD breeders. We are planning to get some guinea pigs and it is a pro rescue forum that I joined. Guinea pig breeders must not be so worthy. I was yelled at by a mod saying that breeders are a bad thing, whatever the animal and breeding in itself is not good. LOL! I know that is different. She said overpopulation happens one litter at a time. Here I am defending you people and I don't have my puppy yet. I DO know that my grandparents were GOOD breeders, mostly I was talking about them. But also said that I was getting a purebred AKC puppy one day, amoung ohter things. Maybe I should do more reading than posting there.

Sorry to post again. I went over to the other forum again and I got this in response to one of my post. I talking about how we are wanting to get a puppy from a breeder. I had posted earlier there about how this cat I had used to attack me on a daily basis. Biting me and scratching me to no end. The cat is now with my sister by the way. We got it from the SPCA.

Breeders do not know any more about their puppy's temperament than the SPCA knew about the kitten's temperament. Why not go for a mature dog from a rescue?

I was talking about how I am scared to get another dog or cat from a rescue because of what happened with my cat. And how most breeders (the good ones) will take back the dog if you can't keep it for whatever reason. And that still got flack from them. And how I have read here that there are waiting lists for puppies and that most puppies are sold with spay/neuter agreements (not all). I think I will keep my mouth shut from now on. They are pro rescue/shelter. Against breeding/ showing/ petstores.

They got a problem with someone wanting to show there dog to the world and being proud of them!!! I can understand the breeding thing if you have an overpopulation problem and people aren't sure if they want a dog and hey give it up after two months well then that's just selfish. I see no problem with taking a puppy back if the owner doesn't want them becasue that ensures proper lineage of the breed and ensures the dig is properly taken care of.

We just have a different system I guess.

Hmmm

I've run across some vets with agendas against breeders. Usually young and inexperienced. There are a quite a few people that have this viewpoint. Some really extreme.

Just how extreme we talking here Tom??? Not too bad I hope. I would really hate to be a breeder and have someone throw a monkey wrench in my program...could make for some pretty tense confrontations and legal trouble.

Not to good let me tell ya.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad breeders that give all breeders a bad name. It's one of those sweeping generalizations that people make. Just as there are people who breed and breed and breed and don't give a rip about what happens to those dogs because they just want to add a few bucks to their wallet, there are some of us who make sure we have homes lined up before we even breed.

I think there is a place for both! I encourage people to go to shelters and to rescues. If you want a purebred Havanese, with a companion personality and will give it companionship, then go for the purebred. If you want some cute mix that is called a Havapoo or whatever, then go to a shelter. You have a lot better chance at knowing what you will get because they are usually older. The mixed breeds, designer breeds, etc. that are sold for big dollars are just a waste of money. That's the biggest gamble out there and so-called "breeders" exploit folks who don't know any better.

All that to say, I think there is a place for breeders, because that is how breeds continue, but I think there is definitely a place for shelters, rescues, etc.

I agree with that. I would prefer a purebred dog. So that is what we will get. I have no problems with shelters though. I also have no problems with telling people not to buy dogs or cats from a petstore. But as far as breeding and showing that is all good, provided it is done the right way.

I think I would be very suspicious of a mixed breed and the uncertainty it can bring sometimes. Sure of you want a purebred dog then go for it but I for one would go for the purebred becase I want a breed that I can tell for sure has been sold not for profit but for the preservation of the breed.

Sure I hear all the time about how a true breeder loses money on pretty much every litter and if their making large cash then somethings really wrong. It shows a lack of ethics to breed for purely financial reasons or to cross breed when you have no idea what your gonna get as a result of course we all know that. There's also getting an animal purely for preservation of that "one" animal as well to ensure no ill act befalls that dog.

If I were interested in purely rescuing a dog then I would definitely go for the shelter dog....more morality in that decision I think and if you can find a Havanese rescue dog then all th better...some people can't have a regular dog due to allergy reasons and others just want to save the Havanese. It'd OK to do that as well. It all depends on the person.

Derek.
