How big are the parents?

I asked the vet the last time we were in with our puppy if she had a formula for determining approximate adult wt. She said to double the wt. at 4 months. Augie turned out pretty darned close to that. He is 4 lbs. larger than his dad and 3 lbs. larger than his mom, so the weight of his parents was no indication in his case.

Oops, should have said 'heavier', not 'larger'. His dad and mom were 9 and 10 lbs.; he is 13 to 13.5 lbs. At 15.5 wks, he weighed 6.4 lbs. As others have said, however, there are other things definitely more important than weight/size.

it can be hard to tell since they often grow at different rates.
my Tillie is on the smaller size and her breeder KNEW she was going to be smaller, BUT we did NOT get her BECAUSE she was going to be smaller. In fact, I wanted Tillie's Sister because she was going to be bigger! But, fate intervened and Tillie chose US.
Some are just naturally smaller, just like some humans are naturally thin bones. Be wary of any breeder who TRIES or BRAGS about having Small havs!
When we brought Tillie home at 14 weeks (3.5 months) she was about 3 lbs... at 7 months she was 7.2 lbs and is 8.5 lbs at a year old. I fully expect her to fill out and gain another lb or so perhaps over the next year...
The MOST important thing with a companion dog is if thier personality FITS with you and your lifestyle!

Buster was 7 lbs at 5 months but was skinny and underweight due to parasites [he was a rescue]. At 1 year he was [and still is at 16 months] 10 lbs, and the Vet says he's just about perfect, weight-wise.

I don't know about his parents' sizes.

I honestly wouldn't just seek out a smaller than average havanese, the ones that are bred to be very little typically have liver problems or other huge vet bills and then all the heart ache that comes along of having a chronically ill dog. Not all do, but enough to cause pause and research.

Gucci was about 8 lbs at 6 months and she has hovered around 10 for her adult weight, anywhere from 9.8-11 at her biggest, I think she was 10.4 at her visit last week, but I think you'd be able to get a more accurate prediction from the size of the parents.

Not always, though. Just like with Augie, Kodi's parents are both right in the middle of the "preferred" size range, at 11 and 12 lbs, respectively. Kodi ended up a slim, trim 16.5!!! (and we love every ounce of him!). As others have said, don't chose on size... Health, temerament and a good fit for your family are much more important!!!

Coco is big-um! At 6 mo. he was 13.8. He's 7 mo now and probabley weighs 15-16 lbs. I just assumed all were small and never really question the breeder. But I would'nt trade him for all the tea in China! I call him my lap and a half dog!
