The Love of a Havanese

I had major surgery 2 weeks ago so I haven't been on the forum lately. Although my surgery was fairly complicated, my surgeon does not believe you can get well in a hospital!! Too many germs, interruptions, uncomfortable bed, rough sheets, etc. So 2 days after my surgery he sent me home to recuperate. From the time I stepped in the door, Cocotini would not leave my side. She has always been a velcro dog that followed me around, but this was different. She assigned herself as my protector. If I was sitting in my leather chair in the family room she would squish herself into the 3 inches next to me. If I was trying to rest in bed she was next to me and if anyone got close she let out a short little growl. It was as if she was saying-back off-my Mommy not's well and I'm going to make sure nothing hurts her!! After about a week she must have decided I was getting stronger and she backed off of her protector role and went back to just being my little velcro follower. This just reinforces my feelings that she is my heart dog and I just couldn't love another dog the way I love my sweet little Cocotini!!

Jocelyn,
It is so great to see you back and posting again Aren't these guys just the best, mine are the same way, a couple of days ago I was down for almost 3 days with a migraine, on the last day, I laid down on the couch and fell asleep, the next thing I knew I woke up because I was roasting, I was so hot, and when I finally focused I realized that I had 6 dogs on my. I was laying on my side and one was on my shoulder/back in between the back of the couch and me another was just down from her on my hip/back, one was snuggled right in front of me, one behind my knees and the other two at my feet. Heck as long as I have these guys I will never need a blanket again

Heather, you're so right! What little sweeties you have, too. I've had several breeds of dogs, but none like the Havanese. I have to say that Candy, my Maltese, also tried to stay close, but at only 3 and 1/2 pounds, Cocotini kept chasing her away and I didn't really have the strength to go and get her. Mindy, well- she's all about Mindy! Happy to see me, but happier still when I feed her (LOL)

Who needs a Three Dog Night when you can have a Six Hav Afternoon?

I get migraines too, and totally sympathize. They're miserable.

I'm so happy to hear you're getting better. I was aware of, and missing your presence, but didn't know anything was wrong. You're right, the little ones can be the best medicine when we need them.

Take care of you and heal fast.

thanks Geri and Kat!! I'm still pretty tired and slow moving, but the Doctor gave me the OK yesterday that I can drive again (but not far!!!) He actually didn't need to tell me not to go too far- I'm exhausted after a few minutes (LOL). He tells me lots of rest will heal me the fastest.

I loved the story about Cocotini being your protector! That is so very sweet!
I have heard stories about dogs sensing these things but just experienced it first-hand the other day. Chewy is too a velco dog like most Havs but also has an independent streak. He is not a huge "cuddle bunny". I came home the other day upset about something. I sat down on a chair in our family room and started to tell my DH and then burst into tears. Chewy was laying on the floor. As soon as I started to cry, Chewy jumped up onto the back of the chair and curled his body around my neck and started licking my cheek. I started crying even more because he is so sweet! I am such a sap!
