Need distractions..

Hi everyone,

I've been away for a while and things have been pretty hectic around here.
My family was getting ready to go away on a long 3-week trip and today they left. It was such a stressful day with making sure everyone had their passports and suitcases that I needed to come on here and unwindd!! Sometimes this site is such a nice de-stresser.

So anyhow, since my parents are gone Ninja is sooo sad. He hasn't eaten much all day and it's been rainy outside so I couldn't really take him outside for distractions. He is extremely attached to my mom and I know these 3 weeks are going to be really hard on him. We played inside a bit today but not for long. Right now hes at the top of our stairs watching the door just waiting for them to come home. Any tips on how to make these 3 weeks go by quickly for him?

Luckily I'll be home most of the time and wherever I go I can try to take him with me. I just need more doggie distraction ideas

Thanks in advance!!

Lots of dog park time? I know you live in the city, but is there anywhere you can take him and let him play in a sprinkler? Kodi ADORES sprinklers in hot weather. (makes a huge mess, but it's worth it to see him having so much fun!)

For indoors, play hide and seek with him, either with yourself or by hiding a favorite toy. Or give him a stuffed bone to work on when you need a break from doggy entertainment!

From my experience of dog sitting my friend's 4 havs, several times...the first 2 days are the hardest for them and then they start to get into a routine and act normal.

Are you at the house he lives in with his parents or your house? If you are at your mom's house, it will be harder because he'll keep wanting to go look for her and wait for her. When I've left Gucci here with my kids, they'd often put her in bed with them and they'd wake up at 6 am with her sleeping at the front door waiting for me , so I told my daughter to go sleep in my room and she'd do a little better staying in bed all night but would jump and run to the door at any sound.

Guess I"m not much help, ehh? lol You just need to get into a good routine, havs love a routine and structure. Why not use mom's pillow for Ninja's naps, maybe he'll be more relaxed with her smell?

Thanks Karen, we have a backyard he can play in the sprinkler there. Great idea.

Kara, I live with my parents so thats the house were in. Your right about him going around and looking for my mom. We just got back from a walk and as soon as we came inside he ran around the house checking to see if they came home

He did play for a little today and loved the walk but still not eating. I no stress on a dog can make them sick so I hope he eats today. I think putting something that smells like my mom next to him can comfort him I'm going to try it now thankss

UPDATE: Happy to announce he finally ate

Then he took a nap and we played fetch for a while. He loves getting the ball but never wants to give it back lol

How would I introduce the hide and seek game to him?

I think Ninja has gotten even cuter! I have to laugh my DH conplains that our Hav's do the same thing. wait. They lay in the den on back of the couch and look out the side window for hours. He claims they do not do that for him not true, if he comes home late or changes his routine they will do the same and wait, but they will also run stand up on their hind legs looking out the window if they hear a sound. My Lhasa does not do any of that but if DH is out of town he wants everyone in bed at about 10 pm!!!! He will herd everyone in to the bedroom guard the door and bark at me until I come....ubnoxious!!!! Usually I will go in and read a book or take the computer, we all need a little peace.

I agree with Robbie - Ninja just keeps on getting cuter! He should settle down after a couple of days when he realizes they aren't just out for a short time. Mine wait for me by the door, too!

Ninja-
The Hide & Seek game. Your pup has to be able to sit and stay and you go hide, then call them.

You can work on the Hide & Seek by training and go down the hallway a little at a time. If they break the stay, walk all the way back to the position and start all over again. It takes patience.
