Don't touch me

Is it odd that my Lucy doesn't like to be touched? She likes to be near but would rather you didn't pet her. She is 8, but was like that from day one. Don't think she doesn't get attention....she is the queen!

Welcome to the forum! Our 4 yr. old girl is like that. She does like to be petted once in a while - on her terms! She never cuddles up to anyone and prefers laying on the floor. She is the first dog I've ever had like this so it was a little off-putting for us but we have gotten used to it now and accept her the way she is as I'm sure you have, too! We got Abby when she was eight months old so at first we thought it was because of that but we believe now that it is just her personality. We added a Havanese puppy, McGee, to our family in April and that has helped her a lot. She loves him so much and they play together several times a day. He wants to snuggle with her, too, and she will have no part of it which makes me realize that it isn't just "us" but her personality!

If you really want a snuggler get another dog! Our McGee is a loving and sweet boy that loves to be held. I think that is more typical of the breed.

Where in Ohio? I have lots of family up there!

Hi Kathie! I really wanted a lap dog! Ha! But love Lucy to death! We consider another dog because we worry when Lucy passes it will be unbearable. She is such the queen bee, would she accept a new sibling? She tolerates my son's Westie, but is very jealous and often goes in attack mode with her. I think she likes her, but is glad for her to go home. Lol. We live in Lima.

A lap dog is exactly what I wanted, too! Was I surprised!!!

If Lucy is still playful then you should consider a puppy or even an older rescue. Havanese Rescue (HRI) has a lot of older dogs, too. We were a little concerned about Abby accepting one but she just loves McGee. She lets him know when he needs to leave her alone and he defers to her. It only took one really ferocious snarl to let him know she is not a morning person and he hasn't bothered her first thing in the morning since! He waits for her to make the first move!

No sure where Lima is but I've heard of it. My dad's family is in the East Palestine area about 20 - 30 miles from Youngstown. They are practically on the PA border. I have an uncle and cousins in Cleveland and one cousin in Columbus.

Welcome. Yeah she probably lacked gentling and handling as a pup. As far as another dog. Here's some questions you have to answer first. http://blogs.dogster.com/dog-trainin...d-dog/2010/12/

Thanks guys. When I got Lucy, I thought I was purchasing from a great breeder....she told me they raised the puppies in their home, and they lived in their living room with them, etc. I 'm pretty trusting..... That being said, we absolutely love Lucy. I don't think she is in the business anymore. :\ We prolly won't get another while Lucy is with us. She did tell me her females were not real affectionate, but I wanted a girl. So, as a rule are most Havanese affectionate...to the touch? Lucy loves us, we know that for sure. Lima is about 100 miles north of Columbus.
