Boarding service in NYC (Brooklyn preferred)

Hi All - For those who are in NYC I would love recommendations for a boarding service. We're going on vacation and may need to board Eli because both my brother and mother will be out of town on their own summer vacations.

I just called my vet's office and while they board their services are less than optimal. They don't walk dogs but let them out in their backyard to play and potty. Saturday they close at 3:30 PM and leave the dogs crated until the following morning at 9:00 AM. When I expressed concern about Eli being crated that long their response was it's usually not a problem since most dogs can "hold it". Uhm, is potty accidents all they're concerned with?!

The best solution for us would be to leave Eli with a professional boarding service that includes walking. I might also consider leaving him with a true dog lover who does pet sitting on the side if they came highly recommended (although I'm not sure what I would need to consider in this case.)

Any information or recommendations are appreciated!

You can also look online for great people. I know Brady's mom found a nice gal on Craigslist. I wonder if you could find someone to stay at your house with him. I'm heading to Colordao tomorrow and my dog sitter will stay here while I am away. It would freak me out to put my guys in a kennel. I know it would freak them out too with all the barking....

I did a job once for Petsmart. They had a really nice Pet hotel in this particular store. We were shooting a comercial all through the night. I will never forget the dogs. Most of them seems so stressed out and didn't sleep all night. This one Yorkie was barking and crying all night long. He was even in the luxury condo with a TV and big bed etc My heart was breaking...

I know a lot of people leave their dogs in kennels, but mine could never handle that environment! I have been able to find people to stay at my house with them. I used to leave them with my breeder's mom who lives close by, but she has gotten older and it has become too much for her to handle (she now has 6 of her own too). I did find someone on Craigslist to babysit them while we were in Cape Cod and needed a babysitter for the evening. I would be careful about bringing someone into your home without doing all the proper checks on them. There are two services that I have not used yet, but have come highly recommended to me. They are and They charge a fee, but do background checks, etc. I may be signing up since my regular sitter got a job in NY training seeing eye dogs and I will be losing her.

A couple of years ago I used a new service called Fetch Pet Care - - for private boarding for my older Lhasa Apso who needed medication and could not handle the stress of a kennel. Vickie stayed at a private home with a family who had a dog her size, and they took good care of her.

Fetch Pet Care primarily has dog sitting and walking services if you would rather have someone come to your house to care for Eli.

My two Havs stay at a Pet Hotel while we are on vacation as my DH does not want a stranger in our home while we are gone.

I used the Fetch service here in NJ and found a lady who will take Henry in her home. He runs around her backyard, even sleeps with her on her pillow!

These are three very well reputed dog sitting/spa/daycare/everything-for-dogs places in NYC which you could look into. They are not cheap, but they are supposed to be very good (especially the first one which so many people go to) and you could go on vacation knowing Ellie is in good hands. Good luck and hope it works out for you.

Thanks everyone for the great recommendations. I also took a quick look at and saw some options there. I'm feeling better about the possibility of leaving him in safe hands when we go on vacation.
