Road Trip

Road Trip

Well me and the pupster are going to go on a road trip in August. Brody's breeder has a puppy picnic every year
for her past puppies to get together. From the photos, it looks like they get a nice turn out each year. They
have a raffle and raise money for a Havanese Rescue (I think through Havanese Fanciers of Canada). When I was doing
my breeder search the puppy picnic was one of the things that ended up in the plus column for her - long term relationships
with her owners.

Anyhow, I don't actually live close to my breeder (it's about a 16 hour drive through the mountains). The flight is short,
but very expensive. I also wasn't anticipating being to actually get time off since there has been some drama at work
with one of the guys suddenly leaving. It's a small shop so I was figuring, oh there goes a summer vacation. But since
the boss wants a vacation he's closing the doors for August and we all get one. Thankfully I have work I can do on my own
at the shop since I can't afford a month off, but I can take 2 weeks.

So, me and the Brodester are going on a road trip! I'm really looking forward to seeing him interact with other
Havanese. I think it'll be good for him. My Dad has been missing Brody badly and can't wait to see him.

I guess we'll really find out if Brody has truly gotten past his car sickness issues. He is in the car every day for
short trips with no problem, but I'll definitely be bringing along a ton of towels and wipes just in case!
(and the gravol too) I'm going to experiment with him trying him in his car seat and if I can find a driving harness
here I'll try that as well (no guarantees I'll even find one as there aren't a lot of shopping options here).
I suspect he'll end up liking being in his crate best, but we'll see which setup he tolerates best. While I
personally think it'd be nice for him to see out the window and stuff, he may not agree.

I'm going to break the trip up over two days; 12 hours one day and 4 hours the next. We're going to drive a route I've
never traveled before, going through Alberta via Jasper on the way to Chilliwack (Vancouver area). It should be
beautiful. I'll have to remember to have my camera with me so I can get lots of pictures of Brody at the rest
stops as I'm sure we'll be stopping frequently.

I'm a bit driving phobic and don't typically drive more than around town and definitely don't drive for fun. So, this
should be interesting. Despite that, I find I'm excited about it. Nervous too, but more excited than nervous.

The things I do for my pup!

I sure hope he tolerates the trip well. I'm not trying to traumatize the dear boy.

Adventure

Mo says you are going on an ADVENTURE! (That's what we call it every time she gets to go for a car ride.) Have fun and drive safe!

The first roofing contractors association which was in Chicago dates back to 1870's. The great Chicago fire in 1871 caused disastrous effect to people and their homes. After the fire, there were huge demand for re - constructing roofs for houses and other business enterprises and weren't many genuine experts who could build roofs within short periods.

Wow, 16 hours for a pupster reunion! Have a great trip! I am not a big driver either and was a bit nervous a few years ago before heading to Mt. Once on the road though, the nerves were gone and it was fun. Hope Brody tolerates traveling well. Yes, we are going to want to see pictures, lots of them, and hear all about your trip and the picnic!

Okay, day one is done. Just 3 1/2 hours to go tomorrow. He cried solid the first 6 hours (except for the 3 stops we made during that time, but the second we got on the road again the crying started up again). On the one hand, my heart broke for him...but on the other hand it was getting on my nerves!!!!! He didn't throw up though...so yay! He did have loose stools once we got to the motel though. Ugh. He ate normally, but i had given him probably more treats than he normally gets trying to get him feeling more positive about things.

The second half of the trip he was much better. Only cried every couple of hours or so and then I'd try and find a place to stop since it was time for him to stop anyhow (although he doesn't understand it isn't always so easy to find a safe place to stop!)

Well we're back. I had a bit of an open schedule because my work was closed for the month of August so I ended up staying about a week longer than I had planned. We went to the puppy picnic and then went up to the family cabin in the boonies (no electricity, running water, internet, cell phone reception, etc.) and just had a blast.

The picnic was just wonderful. I, unfortunately, don't have any pictures from it because Brody's water dish got up-ended onto my camera on the ride there and ruined my camera. My dad did take some pictures but he hasn't sent me them yet.

I do have other pictures from our vacation and I'll post some as soon as I sort through them and get that done.

Brody did great. I was curious how he'd react to a swarm of dogs and there were about 40 or so Havanese there. He was a bit overwhelmed when he got mobbed, but he did great. There was one other pup from his litter there and one pup from the litter that was born a week later. It took a while, but eventually the pups all found each other and were chasing each other all over the place. I found it amazing that there were that many dogs in one place and it was so quiet.

I'm really glad we went.

Brody did get car sick on the way back (the first 1/2 hour or so was over gravel roads and that's where he got sick), but he was quiet and just settled nicely in the back seat. I was sort of apprehensive about the whole 6 hours of non-stop crying thing, but thankfully he didn't treat me to that on the way back. He was so good.

How do I reward him? I booked his appointment for a neuter first thing when I got back. He goes on Tuesday. I'm such a mean mom.

Someone at the BBQ put together a slide show and put it on youtube. Brody managed to escape being in the pictures, but really we were there!

Thanks for sharing that! What a cute group of doggies! I'm so glad Brody enjoyed himself and only got sick once on the trip. Sounds like you had lots of fun at the cabin - no internet? Oh no!

I wondered how your trip went. So glad you had such a good time. Looks like a wonderful setting for the picnic! Great video of the photos - too bad Brody isn't in it, however. So, Brody and his littermate recognized each other? The family cabin sounds perfect!
